Digital Versus

Compact but Unoptimised

from Digital Versus

Compact, easily portable and handling well, the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is unfortunately unoptimised and lacking in the endurance department. It's perhaps not as good a product as you might have expected—at best a back-up tablet, and one of which you mustn't ask too much. There are certainly other tablets in the same category that do a better job.

PC Magazine

Compact and lightweight with smooth performance

from PC Magazine

There's a ton of competition in the 7-inch realm, but even two years after its release (and one year after the latest incarnation), the Google Nexus 7 continues to trump new options that simply can't match its blend of performance, features, and price. Samsung's unimaginative update does little to gain any ground on the Nexus 7. Still, for those already wed to Samsung's services or content, the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is a completely capable device. It delivers a familiar TouchWiz experience that I can see appealing to less adventurous Android users who want something consistent. If you want to save $50, the Asus MeMO Pad 7 also delivers a capable and modern Android experience that rivals Samsung's fit and finish.

PhoneArena

Excellent build and battery life

from PhoneArena

With an accessible price of $199, the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 would have made for an excellent purchase if its performance didn't leave so much to be desired. It would be a far, wide stretch to disregard the tab as unusable, but it fails to deliver the buttery-smooth performance users expect from a 2014 Samsung device. Although the Tab 4 7.0 is remarkably well built, comfortable to hold, and with a sublime user interface, it simply isn't as seamless and pleasant to use like its biggest competitor, the Nexus 7 (2013). Additionally, for just $30 more, the Kindle Fire HDX offers much better performance, a high-resolution display, but trades Google's familiar services for those of Amazon's. However, the Tab 4 is a worthy upgrade from last year's Galaxy Tab 3 in each aspect.

If general sluggishness and mediocre gaming performance aren't deal-breakers for you, this 7-inch tab is great in all other regards. And who knows, perhaps Samsung will deliver an update to make it perform more admirably. After all, the Snapdragon 400 with 1.5GB of RAM should pack enough power to turn any well-optimized 7-inch tablet into a smooth ride.

Android and Me

A mostly solid performer with great battery life, build quality, and a robust display

As the name suggests, on the front is a 7.0 inch display with a resolution of 1280×800. It’s not super high resolution so pixels are noticeable, but it’s certainly far from a bad display as it’s very bright with good color reproduction, easy to see outdoors, and has great viewing angles.

Internally it’s being powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, and 8 gigs of internal storage which will run out quickly unless you augment by micro SD expansion. They’re very mediocre specs and the overall performance throughout the OS is passable with very few hiccups.

The price is a little steep, especially when you can get a Nexus 7 and get a better bang for your buck when it comes to specs making the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 a really tough sell unless you need that micro SD expansion or just want a Samsung made tablet. It’s small, portable, and cheaper than Samsung’s PRO line but it isn’t without it’s shortcomings. With other competitive options for similar prices you might be better off looking elsewhere.
