What You Need to Know

As one of the newer small carriers on the market, U.S. Mobile taps the coverage and speed of the  T-Mobile network (and soon the Verizon network) to offer budget-friendly service with flexible plans to help reduce costs.

All plans are prepaid, starting at only $4 for a handful for texting. The most expensive plan at the time of writing is $59.

If you need a phone, options span from affordable budget options to released from last year's flagship lineups. All U.S. Mobile phones are sold unlocked and include free shipping. However, you won't find device financing. So be ready to pay the full cost upfront at sign-up. Already have a phone? They offer GSM/4G SIM cards for $4.

What’s Good?

  • Flexible Pricing
  • Varied phone selection
  • Unlocking service for AT&T phones
  • No contracts
  • Bring your own device support

What’s Bad?

  • Phone selection is a bit dated
  • Lack of postpaid plan options
  • No international roaming or calling

Notable Features

A La Carte Pricing: Pay for exactly what you need instead of an expensive unlimited plan you might not need.

Phone Unlocking: While currently limited to AT&T, U.S. Mobile is one of the few carriers who will unlock phones from another carrier. Even better, they'll refund the unlock fee if you stick with U.S. Mobile for 6 months.

Awards and Recognitions

As U.S. Mobile is a newer carrier, it doesn't make the awards lists often. However, carrier reviews are generally positive with users loving the customer service, flexible pricing and great coverage.

How's the Network Coverage and Speed?

U.S Mobile leases coverage from T-Mobile, so we'll use their benchmarks in the following section.

T-Mobile claims their 4G LTE network covers 98% of Americans.

You can check coverage and network types in your area using their Coverage Map.

T-mobile took 15 of the 36 awards in PC Magazine's 2018 "Fastest Mobile Networks" study based on their 4G transfer speeds and coverage.

This earned them second place in the study.

T-Mobile's network also ranked first in Ookla's "2018 United States Speedtest Market Report" with a SpeedScore of 27.86 -- up from 23.17 in 2017.

In OpenSignal's July 2018 "State of Mobile Networks: USA" report, T-mobile ranked #1 in both 4G uploads and downloads as well as 3G downloads. Download speeds averaged 23Mbps and 3.75Mbps over 4G and 3G. Uploads on the 4G network averaged just shy of 8Mbps.

Soon, U.S. Mobile plans to also offer service through Verizon. Click here for a full breakdown of their speeds and coverage.

Do They Charge Roaming Fees?

All U.S. Mobile plans include coast-to-coast coverage. This makes domestic roaming charges rare.

Unfortunately, they do not support international roaming. However, as all phones sold by them are unlocked, you can easily pop in a SIM from a local provider to enjoy service at your destination.

What About Long Distance Fees?

For all plans, domestic calls within the US are included with your monthly voice allotment.

Calls outside the US are currently not supported. Speaking with U.S. Mobile customer care, they noted they are revising international rates and expect the feature to return in the future.

Until then, you can receive international calls, but cannot place them. International texting is included with all texting plans at no additional charge.

Does U.S. Mobile Offer Wi-Fi Calling?

No. At this time, they do not support native Wi-Fi calling or offer an app to use the feature on smartphones.

How About Voice over LTE (VoLTE)?

No.

Can I Tether My Phone?

Yes. Tethering is supported on any plan with a data allowance. However, tethered devices might consume data quicker than your phone. So monitor data usage carefully to ensure your allotment last through your billing period.

Can I Rollover Unused Data?

No.

What Add-ons or Bundles are Available?

All U.S. Mobile plans include basic calling features, such as conference calling, voicemail and call waiting.

Currently, they do not offer additional features to purchase.

However, if you find your voice, text or data allotment low before your billing cycle is over, you can top-off your account in your online dashboard.

For more information, consult their FAQ.

Can I Bring My Own Device?

Yes! You can bring your own device for both postpaid and prepaid plans. Unlocked phones must support band 2, 4 and 12 for optimal service.

SIMs kits are available for $2.99 with free shipping. If you purchase a plan or are a student, you can get your SIM for free.

Not sure if your phone is supported? Contact U.S. Mobile customer support to ensure compatibility before ordering a SIM.

Do They Require a Credit Check?

No.

What About Activation and SIM Fees?

U.S. Mobile does not charge an activation fee.

However, if you bring your own phone or tablet, you'll also need a SIM.

Prepaid SIM kits are available for free with free shipping through their online store.

Do They Charge an Early Termination Fee?

No. As there are no contracts, there are no worries about early termination fees.

Can I Port My Number To or From U.S. Mobile?

Yes! U.S. Mobile follows all Local Number Portability requirements allowing you to bring your existing landline or mobile phone number to your new account.

General requirements include:

  • The account with which the number is associated must be active and in good standing.
  • The number must be in an area in which Local Number Portability regulations are in effect.

They offer steps to keep your current number on their FAQ.

Will They Unlock My Phone?

All phones sold by U.S. Mobile are already unlocked.

If you own an AT&T phone you wish to use, they will unlock it for $15. This fee is refunded if you use U.S. Mobile's service for 6 months.

For additional information on the unlocking process, see their Unlock Your Phone page.
