Much like Samsung Galaxy A51 5G, the main upgrade to this phone over the standard Galaxy A71 5G is 5G support. For the sake of knowing exactly what is different here’s a short list of changes when compared to the Samsung Galaxy A51:
- The phone offers a sturdier, aluminum frame
- The phone’s Exynos 980 chipset brings 5G support but comparable performance to standard Galaxy A71
- Slightly more RAM (8GB vs 6GB)
- Larger 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display
In every other area, the phone is identical to it’s non-5G sibling. While the idea of such little change between models might seem odd, 5G’s growing popularity means this phone will likely age with a bit more grace than the non-5G model.
That said, if you don’t live in a 5G area -- or don’t care about 5G support -- the standard model is just as good as this one. For an idea of what to expect, be sure to check out our Samsung Galaxy A51 review.
What the Critics Are Saying...

- Peter Ferenczi, DxOMarkWhen it comes to camera performance, this phone is a harder sell, mainly because the competition in the mid-range segment is so fierce. Although it’s a substantial upgrade in terms of imaging over its older down-market sibling, the Galaxy A50, the A71 5G’s street price puts it up against some very c...

- Julian Chokkattu, WiredIf you're shopping for an Android phone right now and want to future-proof it with 5G, the A71 is a solid buy if you don't pay more than $500. The Pixel 4A 5G costs that much. It matches the A71 in several ways and produces better photos. But the Pixel doesn't have expandable storage, and its batter...

- Stephen Schenck, Android PoliceSamsung's A-series phones are among the best-selling on the planet, and there's a reason for that: They give users a taste of premium Galaxy S features and performance while being much more practical to own. And while that means the A71 5G is making sacrifices all around, the sum of those cuts real...

- Eric Zeman, Android AuthorityThe Samsung Galaxy A71 5G is a solid mid-range device that competes well with others in its class. It offers an excellent screen with solid battery life and speedy performance. At half the cost of flagships, you'd hardly know it's not a top-flight phone.

- Adam Ismail, Tom's GuideThe Samsung Galaxy A71 offers a cheaper path to 5G service if that’s important to you, but otherwise it’s only a decent $600 phone. For hundreds less, the Pixel 4a and iPhone SE are better in almost every respect, save for battery life, while the OnePlus Nord is a much more well-rounded sub-$500 5G...
