Pocket Tactics

Starships is a game that almost no one will hate — it’s too full of that old Sid Meier charm. But it’s too hard to love. The lack of content undermines the feeling of exploring beyond the final frontier and the limp combat is an awkward step back from the elegant Ace Patrol. All of...

Overall, Starships feels like a game damaged by compromise. It wants to be a bite-sized board game experience for a tablet, while at the same time a light strategy game on the PC. In execution, those two conflicting goals rob the game of any drama it might have, and Starships simply lacks the decisi...

Starships is a game that almost no one will hate — it’s too full of that old Sid Meier charm. But it’s too hard to love. The lack of content undermines the feeling of exploring beyond the final frontier and the limp combat is an awkward step back from the elegant Ace Patrol. All of the components of a brilliant game are here, but they’ve been fitted together almost carelessly. It was a lovely surprise back in February to hear that a new Sid Meier game was coming, but the biggest surprise has turned out to be how un-Sid Meier it is.

Overall, Starships feels like a game damaged by compromise. It wants to be a bite-sized board game experience for a tablet, while at the same time a light strategy game on the PC. In execution, those two conflicting goals rob the game of any drama it might have, and Starships simply lacks the decisive, killing blows that make space operas feel epic. And for that reason it left me cold.

If you enjoyed the battles in Ace Patrol but wish there was a bit more to chew on between fights, you'll probably enjoy Sid Meier's Starships an awful lot. It's also an easy recommendation to anyone looking for an accessible strategy game with a sci-fi theme. For whatever reason, space sims tend to be among the most complex examples of the genre, and that can be intimidating for a lot of people. Starships is about as friendly as a strategy game can get. The game will practically play itself if you keep asking for hints. However, it also has just enough depth to it to keep you coming back for a while, trying out all of the different variables and going after all the different victory conditions. Veteran strategy fans with hardcore tastes will probably find the game a bit too light, though, and the lack of multiplayer and flawed AI keep it from being all that it might have been. Even with its failings, I still think it's a good game that may not live up to the highest standards of Sid Meier's name, but certainly doesn't tarnish it.

The best part of Sid Meier’s Starships is that there’s always something to do whether it’s upgrading your ships, building cities on federation planets, completing missions with new tactical combat, or interacting with other federation leaders. A single game can take hours, yet a single play session can take minutes as you choose how to explore, upgrade, and interact with other leaders. There are multiple ways to win a given game, and it’s great to see the map take shape as you expand your starship fleet to better handle the increasing threats of the unknown and enemies. Every single move delivers engaging gameplay, and everything is set-up to make relatively complex components as accessible as possible. The space combat is the definite highlight, but having multiple levels of strategy from the individual battles to the expansion of your federation is simply great to have on an iPad.

Cnet

A tough tablet held back by a mediocre screen

from Cnet

The Toshiba Excite Pure suffers from a weak screen and lackluster performance. The tablet is decent family device, since it's durable enough to handle being passed around and can play video and games well. The plastic back means that it's nowhere near as fragile as an iPad.
