Toshiba Excite 7.7 review

7/10 AVG.

Informr score
The Toshiba Excite 7.7 currently has an Informr score of 7 out of 10. This score is based on our evaluation of 11 sources including reviews from users and the web's most trusted critics.

The Toshiba Excite 7.7 is just one of several Android-powered tablets from Toshiba. It comes in a 7-inch form factor, uses anNVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, offers up to 32GB of onboard storage, and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich by default. It’s presents a formidable proposition on paper. But just when it seems like nothing could ever go wrong with the Excite 7.7, Toshiba goes and ruins things.

A lot of reviewers have gone on record to say that the 7-inch form factor offers the “sweet spot” in terms of tablet usability and portability. In this regard, the Excite is as sweet as any tablet can be, with its 7.7-inch 1280x720 AMOLEDtouchscreen display. It also carries several other hardware niceties like 1GB RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS, microSD card support, and microUSB connectivity. Its main camera is equipped with a 5-megapixel sensor, while the secondary one which sits up front is a 2-megapixel one. All of these hardware features are kept inside a lightweight aluminum case that measures just 8mm thick. For something so sleek, the Toshiba is a beast.

The problem with this tablet is that Toshiba was determined to put a $500 price tag on it. When it was first launched with this pricing, most people cried fowl. And then when the $200 Google Nexus 7 came out, well, you do the math.

The Excite 7.7 is a feature-packed Android tablet that is truly worthy of praise as far as its hardware and software attributes are concerned. But when you factor in its retail price, that’s when things start to turn sour for this device. It’s definitely worth consideration, but not if its priced north of $300.

Need To Know: Toshiba Excite 7.7

1. The 7.7-inch 1280x720 AMOLED touchscreen display makes the Excite 7.7 among the best in its class in terms of display quality. (The Good)

2. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as default operating system means the Excite 7.7 is brimming with software features. (The Good)

3. Far too expensive when compared with its direct competition. (The Bad)

4. An upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or later versions of Android is unlikely. (The Bad)

What the Critics Are Saying...

Android Guys

The Toshiba Excite 7 shows its shortcomings most when you stack it up against other, sexier devices. Is it boring and uninspired? Yeah, maybe. Would it be worth saving a little bit more and going with a Nexus 7? Isn’t it always? We venture say, however, that mom and dad wouldn’t be upset...

Digital Trends

Toshiba’s Excite 7.7 tablet delights with a compact size, plenty of power and a gorgeous AMOLED screen, but can’t compete on price.

This tablet has a killer display, excellent performance, and an extremely comfortable form factor - so, what's wrong with it? Sadly, the price will be the downfall of this amazing little machine. This is, hands down, one of the best tablets I've ever used. However, with the $200 Nexus 7 on the horiz...

No longer regarded as a newcomer in the Android tablet scene, Toshiba is doing a great job in building up its reputation with its new line of Excite tablets. Just like its names, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding the diminutive Toshiba Excite 7.7, as it boasts top-notch hardware in a com...

- John V., PhoneArena

The Toshiba Excite 7.7 is one of the first Android tablets good enough to leave my iPad untouched. The small size and good build quality make for a tablet that is perfect for carrying whenever I leave the house. The ability to play great looking games on the Toshiba Excite 7.7 is a big plus for use...
