What's good

  • Entry level priced tablet
  • Offers expandable microSD slot and 25GB of cloud storage

What's bad

  • Low resolution display
  • Slow CPU
  • Mediocre hardware

The HP 8 falls into the budget Android tablet market. As an entry level device, the HP 8 doesn't offer an impressive hardware sheet. It comes with a 7.85" IPS display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. While this makes it the same size as the iPad Mini 2, it has a much lower pixel density at 131ppi and cannot compete in terms of raw power. It comes with a paltry 1 GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. On paper, the quad-core processor might sound like a steal for the price, however The Digital Reader warns, "…the Allwinner chip…offered the same performance as dual-core CPUs." In addition, it comes with 16GB of internal storage, though this can be expanded thanks to a microSD slot. HP also addresses the lack of onboard storage with the inclusion of 25GB of cloud storage.

As with all tablets, the HP 8 comes with a two cameras: a rear-facing 2MP camera and lower resolution 0.3MP front-facing camera. It also comes with a host of basic features like WiFi, an accelerometer, gyroscope and speakers. Android Community describes the specs as nothing to get excited about but adds, "…we do have that price to remember."

There's not much to write home about with the HP 8. Its unimpressive spec list and hardware won't win it any editor's choice awards among tech experts. Liliputing states, "The HP 8 is a spectacularly unremarkable device that has the kind of specs you'd find in a cheap Chinese tablet…But it's priced accordingly."
