Reviews summary

Based on 8 reviews

What's good

  • Impressive camera performance for budget category
  • Good basic performance
  • Budget price tag

What's bad

  • Performance lags with multiple apps open
  • Mediocre sunlight legibility
  • Colors fade on lower brightness setting

The Xiaomi Redmi 1S is the first handset from the company that is officially available outside of countries where Chinese is not the official language. As a budget phone, the Redmi 1S doesn't boast a sleek design and instead opts for a traditional rectangular shape. At 158 grams, it is definitely not lightweight or thin at 0.4 inches. While reviewers describe it as clunky, they also add that it is solidly built without any wobbles or creaks.

The front panel sports a 4.7-inch IPS display with a resolution of 720p. Experts describe it as one of the best displays on a budget phone due to its vivid colors, decent sunlight legibility and overall crispness. Firstpost, however, was not as impressed. While they agree that colors pop on maximum they add, "…turn it lower and the image turns insipid very quickly." Others noticed issues with sunlight legibility though they go on to state that it is better than other phones in its price range.

Performance-wise, the Redmi 1S comes packed with a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. Synthetic benchmark tests place it slightly above the more expensive Moto G. When put into real-life situations, its performance is decent. Experts did not experience any major lag when navigating the menu, browsing the web or using basic apps. However, once they began multi-tasking with numerous apps they did notice slow-downs and the occasional crash. Graphics-intensive games also suffered from some stuttering and lag, but critics had no issues with more casual games.

When it comes to budget phones, most companies tend to save money on the camera. Fortunately, Redmi does not follow that trend and offers a 5-piece lens with an f/2.2 aperture to capture more light and a 28mm wide-angle lens for wider shots. Critics praise the camera as the best in its price range with accurate color reproduction and good contrast though they note that they had some issues with focus.

While it might not be the perfect phone, reviewers consider it one of the best budget smartphones available. India Times says, "It redefines the entry-level smartphone segment and creates a new benchmark. The phone is not just good on paper but is also an all-round performer…"

Fone Arena

One of the best budget smartphones ever made

from Fone Arena

The Redmi 1S is easily one of the best budget smartphones that you can buy in the market right now. Yes, it’s availability is restricted to online, especially on Flipkart, but it hasn’t stopped more than 200,000 people from buying it. So, if you are still on the fence, don’t think about it. It has a great screen, a decent camera, great performance and offers them at a price other companies are struggling to match. Minor issues like overheating, which has been fixed in an update, and average battery life aside, the Redmi 1S is clearly class leading and, as mentioned before,... Full review

Reasonable performance for the price

from GSMArena

The Xiaomi Redmi 1S didn't work out quite as expected. The reflective display and far from compact body got us preparing for a letdown but the Redmi 1S did well to turn that around and finish on a high.

The Xiaomi Redmi 1S would've been just a face in the Snapdragon 400 crowd was it not for the screen resolution and, of course, the price. It comes across as reasonably snappy and has very good imaging skills - but we can think of at least a dozen others that match that description.

Yet, it's probably the cheapest Snapdragon 400-powered smartphone you can get and one tha... Full review

An exceptional phone for its price

from UnleashThePhones

If you’re on a really tight budget and looking for a decent phone, there’s just nothing better out there right now. It’s really heartening to know that Xiaomi hasn’t attempted to cut corners on a device this inexpensive. At a similar (or close-ish) price, there’s the Asus Zenfone 4, Moto E, Lumia 530 and Micromax Unite 2 A106, all of which have their own pros and cons but none as much value-for-money as the Redmi 1S. Infact, I’d even say that the Xiaomi Redmi 1S is the phone to beat in the entry-level segment.

There’s a sharp, bright scre... Full review

Tech Ticker

Perfect entry for a relatively new brand

from Tech Ticker

The Redmi 1S supports dual-SIM and has a good call quality that is helped by the dual mic for noise reduction. The battery on the device is rated at 2000mAh and in our tests with a single SIM, the phone lasted for more than a day with Wi-Fi and around 14 hours with two SIMs and lots of calls.

The MIUI OS is based on Android 4.3 is largely unchanged from what we saw in the Mi3. You’ve got the same lock screen that gives quick access to music, calls, messages, camera or flashlight; private messaging; no app drawer; Themes support; call recorder; FM Radio; Compass; MiTalk and... The Indian Express

Patience pays

from The Indian Express

Despite the slow-charging battery, app crashes and the design flaws, the Xiaomi Redmi 1s is still the best phone you can buy at this price. Those problems are not deal-breakers, and importantly, Redmi 1s gets it right in the things that matter: screen quality, overall battery life, and camera.

The only issue with the phone is that purchase model, which is frustrating, annoying, and perhaps even insulting. Frankly, it’s ridiculous that buying a phone with your own hard-earned money is this difficult. If you’re fine with jumping through Xiaomi’s hoops, then the Re... Full review

Redefining value again

from NDTV

Xiaomi continues the trend of aggressive pricing first set by Motorola earlier this year. Samsung and Micromax, who were comfortably ruling the roost in the under-10k price segment, have had the carpet pulled out from under them.

Even more expensive phones such as the Moto E. The Micromax Unite 2 cannot match the Redmi 1S with its reliable performance, great camera, crisp screen and excellent battery life. The only major drawback we see is the lack of Android 4.4 (KitKat) at the moment.

Looking at this phone's specs, it is easy to make comparisons to the Moto G... Full review

The Mobile Indian

Affirms the budget value

from The Mobile Indian
As a budget device, the Redmi 1s sets a new benchmark in the sub Rs 6000 segment which will be very difficult to beat. This benchmark is in terms of delivering competitive and latest hardware married with smooth user interface. The camera manages to surprise us with the results and the performance. However, the lack of Android 4.4 KitKat update, heating issues and online only availability might make one think have second thoughts about the smartphone. In case both these are fixed with an update, then Redmi 1s does become worthy recommendation... Full review

Well built for the price that the company is asking

from Digit

So, this review has been about two things. Firstly, to find out whether the Xiaomi Redmi 1S any good, and secondly, is it really a competition breaker like the Mi3. While the answer to the first question is yes, the Redmi 1S isn't quite the competition breaker that the Mi3 was. It offers specs above its competitors, but doesn't deliver in terms of performance. What works most in favour of the Redmi 1S is its Rs. 5,999 price tag, which makes it very good value for money. We would definitely recommend this phone, but if you're expecting the wow factor that you had with the Mi3, then you may b... Full review
