It’s easy for us tech geeks to forget that there are a great many folks out there who just want a solid, reliable cell phone without all the fancy frills. Just because a cell phone isn’t tricked out with technology that still hasn’t dried doesn’t mean it isn’t a good phone!

Enter the Samsung SPH-M210, a decent, entry level clamshell with good sound quality, basic feature set, and an iconic keypad you could navigate with your eyes closed.

This dual-band CDMA offering measures a mere 85x45x22mm closed, offers a modest 128x160 pixel internal display and a monochrome external display. In addition to being Bluetooth capable, there are games, a scheduler, alarm and world time clock to round out this feature set.

Simple to use, easy to hold, the Samsung SPH-M210 is a phone for normal people who use their devices to, ahh, make calls!

Last spring, i have noticed that my phone was shutting off by itself occasionnaly. By the summer, it was shutting off by itself many times per week. This is a useless phone. Worst ever that i ever had. Don't take a chance on this phone. Less

A Few Pet Peeves

I like that it is small, is a flip phone, so it doesn't turn on when I don't want it on nor butt-dial. I like that it is small, is a flip phone, so it doesn't turn on when I don't want it on nor butt-dial. But here's what I don't like: # When it is plugged in on the charger, upon reaching the fully charged state it chirps. While this may be useful to some people, it is not useful to someone who gets in after a long day and plugs in her phone in a hotel room before going to bed. # I can't advance through several new text messages with the down arrow key. I have to hit back to get out to the message list then hit down to select the next message, then ok to see that message. # In order to enter a question mark in a text message I have to hit the sequence: left soft key, 3, right nav key, right nav key, 3. # If I close the cover on the flip phone after dispatching a text message but before confirmation that it sent, it cancels the message. # If I press the off button while the Message Sent! confirmation is displayed, it displays the message Sending Cancelled before turning off. The message isn't cancelled. It just says that. # If a text message fails because of poor coverage, it doesn't try again. I have to reselect the failed message and try again and again. My other phone keeps trying until it goes through. # The submenu giving me access to the alarm function is located under the Shop menu on the main screen. What does an alarm have to do with shopping? # It is possible to customize the nav keys to serve as shortcuts. The offered list of frequently used features includes selecting a new ring tone or changing the picture on the display. It doesn't include composing a new text message. # There are innocuous-looking menu options, e.g. Short Code List in the messaging menu, which launch a web browser, for which I get charged at atrocious Canadian data rates, and which I asked the phone company to disable. # It doesn't have any option to display the number of minutes remaining in the plan I have selected. Even if I log into the company website, they won't tell me whether my next call will be at the plan rate or at the exorbitant "you ran out of plan minutes" rate. Less

NOT TO HAPPY ABOUT IT!

This phone was sent to me by Telus, because my previous one , the batterie was starting to have to be re-charged more an more often, and since I had a warranty on my battery from my previous one, (that I paid 59.99$ + tx) , after 1 1/2 years of use, they said that my phone was too old (thier are old of...More
This phone was sent to me by Telus, because my previous one , the batterie was starting to have to be re-charged more an more often, and since I had a warranty on my battery from my previous one, (that I paid 59.99$ + tx) , after 1 1/2 years of use, they said that my phone was too old (thier are old ofter 2 months, so they say) and that they don't have any of those batteries in stock. WHAT the .....? Why do they offer you a warranty on the battery when your contract is for 3 years and you can't get a new one after 1 1/2 years? Anyway, after arguing with them for a while, they offered me a new cell (with a new battery ;o) ), and they said it was worth 125.$ can. YA RIGHT! , I am not a big user of cell phones, but , what I had before ( 2 for 1 at 60. $ ) , was a lot better than this one and certainly a better quality. At least I had a camera, video uses, and a easy-to-flip-open phone before and easy to use voice command. This one, is , to me, worth 20.$ max. . Need to use both hands to open, never mind my finger nails to pry it open, voice mail, blaaaaa!. Anyway, if you want a cell phone in case of emergencies, this one is so-so, but that's all.... Less

Pretty Crappy

I got this phone as a replacement when I lost my old one. I did so because it was cheap, and I got what I paid for. Texting on it is tedious and I am always running out of memory. It has no speaker phone or camera (not a big deal to me). My biggest problem with it is the lack of functionality. The menu...More
I got this phone as a replacement when I lost my old one. I did so because it was cheap, and I got what I paid for. Texting on it is tedious and I am always running out of memory. It has no speaker phone or camera (not a big deal to me). My biggest problem with it is the lack of functionality. The menus look like they were drawn with crayons and it doesn't even have an alarm. Worst of all, I've had it for less that a year and the battery has gotten so bad that I have to charge it daily and after any call up to an hour in length. Also, when you increase or decrease the volume it actually rings out loud, which is totally annoying. I am generally a phone minimalist...I don't need crazy features, but this phone is lacking even for me. I now curse myself for signing on to a 3 year deal originally and being stuck with this crappy phone because Telus won't offer me a deal on a new one, even with renewal. I would only recommend this phone to someone who would rarely use it and just needs something cheap for emergencies. Less

Great Phone

Excellent phone: I bought this phone for my mother who is an older adult, she loves the fact that the screen is easy to read, simple features, and big numbers. The call quality is great, as well as the battery life. She's happy, therefore I'm happy. It's light weight and small design make it easy to carry around.

My only compaint is that once the outer screen goes out you have to open the flip to get the time or signal, it would be nice to get the exterior screen to relight by pushing one of the scroll keys like on other flip phones. All in all , a good solid phone.
