As the smaller sibling to the Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus, the standard Galaxy A8 offers a nearly identical experience in a smaller, less expensive package.
Key differences between the phones include:
- Slightly smaller screen: While running the same 1080-by-2220 resolution as the A8 Plus, the screen on the standard model is only 5.6 inches. However, this means increased pixels per inch and a slightly brighter screen. Also, as many reviwers had issues with one-handed use on the A8 Plus, it may provider better usability.
- Less RAM: The top-end variant of the A8 Plus offers 6GB of RAM -- an option not available in the standard A8. However, reviewers had no issues with stuttering or multitasking that weren’t already preset in the 6GB A8 Plus variant.
- Smaller battery: The standard A8 includes a 3000mAh battery. Reviews indicate it’s good for a full day of use just like the larger 3500mAh battery in the A8 Plus -- likely thanks to the smaller display.
Otherwise, the features are exactly the same as those you’ll find in the larger, pricer model. For more details on what to expect from this latest Samsung mid-tier release, be sure to check out our Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus summary.
What the Critics Are Saying...

- Edward Munn, AlphrThe Samsung Galaxy A8 is a great-looking handset, but unfortunately it comes up short compared to its main rivals in most other areas. It scored significantly worse than the OnePlus 6 and Honor 10 on CPU and graphics benchmarks, and its camera produced disappointing results when not being used in pe...

- Nathan Spendelow, Expert ReviewsAlmost everything here is above board, but the burning question is whether there’s still room for a mid-range Samsung phone in 2018. With OnePlus and Honor dominating the charts, whatever Samsung manages to produce faces an uphill struggle – and I think the Galaxy A8 is no exception.

- Max Parker, TrustedReviewsThe Samsung Galaxy A8 is a nice phone; it looks and feels good. The screen is as bold as any and the camera is fun to use. However, it’s a shame that in some respects the phone appears closer to the much cheaper Motorola Moto G6 Plus than the Honor 10 and OnePlus 6, which are closer in price. Proces...

- Karan S, GeeknizerThe Samsung Galaxy A8 is a head-turner, yet it is priced above its segment. The amazing display, powerful processor, and unique dual selfie cameras make up the A8 a desirable phone. However, one would have to overcome a few down-pullers before buying it : high price, slower GPU, single Rear Camera.

- Andrew Williams, TechRadarThe Samsung Galaxy A8 is a slight step down from the Galaxy S9 - or even the Galaxy S8 - in just about every way, but it still delivers many of the core features offered by the flagships. You can get more for your money elsewhere, but if you're set on Samsung there's little to complain about here.
