The "1-Minute" Review
Verdict
When you’re in a competing market with Apple and Samsung, you had better bring your A-game. Sadly, in this case, the Motorola Edge+ (2022) comes up short primarily due to its weak cameras. What's good
- 144Hz refresh rate
- Blazing processor
- Fast-charge brick included in the box
- Excellent screen
What's bad
- No true IP rating
- Made of plastic
- Only two years of updates guaranteed
Motorola wants to be considered among iPhone and Samsung as a leader in the phone market. The Motorola Edge+ (2022) is the result of their attempts. But is it any good?
Design
There hasn’t been a significant redesign for the Motorola Edge Plus since the Motorola 20, and they’re pretty much the same. Reviewers said that the Cosmos Blue and Stardust White were very lovely colors.
The two major drawbacks mentioned were that the phone is plastic compared to the aluminum of its competitors and that the back of the phone is super slippery. It’s easy to drop off a slightly inclined surface, including wireless charging disks.
Display
Reviewers made a point to mention that there was a particular effort in improving the screen on the phone and that it was largely successful. The 6.7-inch OLED panel proved to have exceptionally vivid colors and good contrast for the media reviewers sampled.
Performance
The Motorola Edge Plus 2022 comes with the newest android chip, the Snapdragon 8 gen-1, and as a result, it has excellent performance reviews. Reviewers stated it did remarkably well switching between apps and playing some graphics-intensive games.
Software & Storage
It comes with Android 12 installed, but reviewers were disappointed with only two years of guaranteed upgrades and three years of security updates. It also comes with Material You, which allows you to change menu colors, size or shape of icons, and font size, which reviewers were happy about. The phone has 512GB of storage immediately, but reviewers were disappointed that the phone’s design did not include a microSD slot.
Cameras
Motorola found solid improvements for their 50MP primary camera sensor on the Edge Plus 2022. The pictures were excellent and relatively true to life as far as color goes. Reviewers said low-light shots remain grainy and blown out though. They also would have preferred a telephoto lens where the depth sensor exists instead.
Battery Life
Reviewers stated that battery life could only be described as average without the 144Hz refresh rate. However, it was pretty dismal with it active, coming in just under the 7-hour mark. Power users should keep a charger nearby.
Audio
With only one bottom-firing speaker, one can assume it doesn’t do all that well in terms of outward sound, even without the mention of it by reviewers. Just assume Bluetooth or USB-C headphones are the best options.
Specs at a Glance
- Plastic chassis
- 6.7-inch OLED
- Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor
- 8/12GB of RAM
- Android 12
- 512GB of storage
- 50+MP camera
- 4800mAh battery
Bottom Line
Overall a phone worth buying, even if the claims of levelling itself with the two big giants in the phone industry are slightly short-sighted. It’s no slouch, though, with fast performance and a lovely screen. But you’ll have to trade battery life for visual quality if you want to keep the 144Hz features enabled.
PC Magazine says, “The Motorola Edge+ is a slightly more affordable Android flagship for Verizon, but its camera quality doesn't measure up to other top-of-the-line phones.”
Android Police states, “The 2022 Motorola Edge+ has the latest Snapdragon processor, the fastest data speeds available, and a flagship level camera setup. Motorola has also cut costs on features and build quality expected to be present on flagship devices, but still charges those same flagship prices, ultimately making it hard to recommend.”
What the Critics Are Saying...

- Nick Gray, PhandroidThe Motorola Edge+ 2022 is a good phone, but that’s selling for a bad price. If you can find a discount and pick one up for around $800, you’ll be quite happy with the device, but if you’re truly looking to spend $1,000 on a smartphone, there are much better options you should consider.

- Corbin Davenport, XDA DevelopersThe Motorola Edge Plus is a fine phone. Not oh-my-stars-amazing, not terrible, but somewhere in between. The performance and software experience is about what you would expect for a $1,000 smartphone, and even though the cameras might fall behind the competition in some areas, you can still take som...

- Myriam Joire, GeekSpinThe Moto Edge+ (2022) is a well-rounded flagship with great software that’s let down by middling cameras and a high price tag.

- Philip Michaels, Tom's GuideGamers will like the powerful processor and 144Hz refresh rate on the Motorola Edge Plus (2022). But the lack of a telephoto lens makes this a hard sell over the Galaxy S22 or iPhone 13 Pro.

- S. Rutherford, EngadgetHonestly, the Edge+ feels like a trap: It has the build and cameras of a mid-range phone with a couple high-end features to lure you in. But it's missing a lot of the polish and sophistication you should be getting on a top-tier device. And while I can't tell how much carrier partnerships or the ong...
