The LG GR500 Xenon from AT&T is a very pocketable touchscreen feature phone, and the slide-out QWERTY keyboard makes it a messaging powerhouse, thanks in part to the bevy of shortcuts available. The phone is built solidly and offers up a decent battery life. Its built-in loudspeaker is nice and loud, and the music player is robust, too. The customizable standby screen offers plenty of shortcuts for any user, but we found the multiple favorite contacts lists to be confusing. Also, the widgets on the homescreen do not rotate well, forcing them to be repositioned every time you slide the keyboard out. The camera takes decent photographs, and the single LED flash does a great job of illuminating a subject without completely washing things out. The web browser is a joy to use, as well, thanks to AT&T's zippy 3G network. Based on this, we at MobileBurn.com give the LG GR500 Xenon a 'Highly Recommended' rating.

This feels like a solid device without having a bulky feel to it

from Mobile Syrup

For the past few days we’ve been playing around with the LG Xenon, this was recently launched through Rogers. Knowing this is a touchscreen with a full slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, our first impression was that you can seriously have some fun with it.

The touchscreen is 2.8 inches and has a resolution of 240 x 400. I really like the brightness and size of the screen, it was great for typing my text messages (160 character limit) and also viewing my pictures (2 megapixels and has an LED flash). The overall dimensions are 105.5 x 53.5 x 15.8mm with a weight of 105 grams. This feels like a solid device without having a bulky feel to it....

The Xenon gets a lot of things right, but misfires in several directions, too. The menu system works for the most part, but the duplicated buttons and tabs may be confusing for many.

Quick and easy messaging features make typing up SMS, MMS, email and IM a breeze. It's too bad the keyboard isn't all that great.

The camera works really well, takes good pictures and video, and goes overboard with the editing features. The gallery also has a novel scroll feature that is fun to use and makes searching for / finding images a little bit easier.

The music player is apt, sounds good, has a neat visualizer and equalizer. Unfortunately, you're restricted to using stereo Bluetooth headphones or an adapter (which isn't supplied).

The browser is speedy enough, and looks good on the screen, but some of the navigation controls severely limit day-to-day usability.

For the messaging-minded teens and young adults that this device is aimed at, none of these are likely to be deal breakers. On the contrary, its messaging strengths will probably outweigh any of the weaknesses that we were able to find.

If you're in the market for a messaging phone that nearly does it all, the Xenon is worth a look.

I've had this phone for a couple years now and it's still kicking! Battery life is really good, might have to charge it once a week. The qwerty keyboard is super helpful for long texts. Only problem is that the phone will shut off every now and then when I slide the phone shut after sending a text. I assume it's because I am sliding the phone too fast that it causes it to turn off, which would explain why when dropped it will also shut off. Nonetheless the phone is extremely durable and works well for just texting and calling. Less

We purchased this phone and it only lasted 6 weeks. Through normal use it developed a crack in the screen. Neither Rogers Communications would cover the loss of the phone (since it was physical damage) and it would cost more to repair the phone than to buy a new one. Rogers referred us to LG since it was a manufacturing problem. Good luck getting any assistance from them. Their customer service agent was incredibly rude and tried to argue with me that cell phones were not designed to be put in the pocket. All my other phones by other manufacturers lasted at least 2 to 3 years. I feel this product should be sold with a protective case since it is not durable. I do not recommend buying this phone. Less

This is all too true. Mine has a cracked screen now from dropping it once after almost 3 years of use. Crappy design, camera sucks, touchscreen is cheap and plastic. Not many features avaliable. Back gets scratched in a bink of an eye. Also has no wifi abilities. Can't belive i paid $50 for it, even 3yrs ago

I've had the phone for about 10 months and it works quite good. There are some downsides though.. It freezes all the time when i am sending/receiving messages, goes on emergency only all the time and sometimes turns on and off randomly for no reason. besides the annoyance of the freezing a few times a day, i like the phone alot. A lot of people say a lot of bad things about this phone, but I have had no issues. I have had it for almost 2 years. The touchscreen has never given me any issues, the menus are easy to navigate, and the call quality is crisp. The phone has frozen twice in 22 months. That is perfectly acceptable, considering I know people with phones that freeze frequently. A simple battery pull and it was back to normal. I really only have a few complaints: 1) The limit of storing 150 text messages (cumulative, in and out) is not enough. I constantly have to delete messages to avoid my inbox filling up. 2) The browser supports HTML, but it is awful at that. WAP browsing works great, but if the page isn't designed for a mobile browser and thus has to load all the HTML content, the experience is pathetic. The processor just isn't strong enough to animate the page quickly or effectively. 3) Having to hit that physical button on the side to unlock the touchscreen every time I want to use it is a bit annoying. Many other phones offer better options than this. I got used to it, but it's still annoying. 4) I really wish it suppressed text alerts when in the text messaging application. I could be in the middle of writing one, and another text comes in. The alert window letting me know about it pops up, with the options 'view' and 'ignore'. I cannot continue writing my text until I touch either button on the screen. That is a little frustrating sometimes. Also, if you hit "view", it's very inconsistent as to whether it saves a draft of the text you were in the process of writing. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Less

This is the worst phone I've ever had! It frequently shuts itself off, particularly when I'm trying to create a text message. As well, I can no longer use it to make phone calls because I can't hear anything for the first 20 or-so seconds of a call! Ignoring the glitches, it's still a horrible phone. The speaker-phone is bad quality, the headphones are bad quality. It's a slow phone, in general. It takes a good 15 seconds to load a text message, which drives me insane! It constantly interrupts what you're doing with annoying messages. I really don't want a confirmation that the message has been sent, I only want to know when it doesn't work. The camera's not great, and the battery doesn't last long. It takes up to 5 minutes to delete the text messages from my inbox, but then doesn't delete them all! I have many friends that also own this phone and they've also complained about the slow speed, bad battery life, horrid sound quality, randomly turning off, and being unable to hear the other person at the beginning of a call. Don't waste your money on this junk. I can't believe a company would sell such a horrible phone. I'll never buy LG again. Phone was repaired 4 times!!! Stil malfunctions! LG replaced it with refurbished phone, full of visible straches, customer service at LG is horrible, they simply hang up on me!!!!! Talked to supervisors at LG, she told me that they only assble phones and parts coming from various supplies, such a stupid excuse, so now I am suppose to trace their suppliers?.....NEVER buy anything LG, including electronics!!!!!

This phone is awful

Phone has been out for four repairs and one new sim card. Contacts switch names and or numbers. The phone freezes constantly, anywhere from a minute to an hour and a half. Just a bad phone.
