The "1-Minute" Review
Verdict
The camera isn't just a novelty. Reviewers said it works great. But the phone is heavy and it lacks some little things, like wireless charging or a water-resistance rating, for the price. What's good
- Great performance
- All-screen design
- Flip camera system
What's bad
- No telephoto lens
- No wireless charging
- No waterproofing
The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip has a camera mechanism that flips out at the press of a button, making it both the front-facing and rear-facing camera all in one. But beyond this one trick, is it worth owning?
Design
The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip is quite a hefty piece of equipment, according to reviewers, The all-screen design means minimal bezels on the outside of the screen but it’s still quite heavy compared to comparably sized phones. It comes in two colors: galactic black and glacier silver.
Display
A 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen dominates the front of the device. Reviewers were pleased to see a 90Hz refresh rate rather than the standard 60Hz option on many phones. Reviewers argued that 90Hz was a good compromise between battery stamina and display quality compared to snappier 120Hz models.
Performance
While the Zenfone 8 Flip has 8GB of RAM compared to its 16GB sibling, the Zenfone 8, it’s no slouch when it comes to performance. Reviewers were delighted with its ability to run things smoothly, owing partially to the better refresh rate. Performance modes also make it easy to prioritize multitasking, battery life, and other factors as you see fit.
Software & Storage
The phone runs Android 11 with Asus’ ZenUI running over the top. Reviewers stated that ZenUI was much like stock Android except for a few extra quality of life additions. The Zenfone 8 Flip comes with either 128 or 256GB of storage, with an expansion option via a microSD card.
Cameras
The camera mechanism is the real star on this phone, allowing the front-facing 64MP lens to double as a selfie camera as well. There’s also a 113-degree ultra-wide lens and a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. Overall, reviewers were very happy with the camera performance for the Zenfone 8 Flip. However, it won’t quite keep up with the likes of Samsung or Apple on detail or image quality.
Battery Life
The weight of the phone is mostly due to its massive 5,000mAh battery, but that also means plenty of charge for a long day of work.
Reviewers stated that while it’s not a multi-day battery for heavy users that it would certainly make it through the day just fine and in the event you were away from a charger and needed to sneak more out of the battery life there are options for battery saving mode and reducing the 90Hz refresh to 60Hz.
Audio
It can be assumed by the lack of mention of good or bad audio that it likely rides the middle line like most smartphones these days. Bluetooth headphones or a headphone adapter are your best options for really immersing yourself in the audio experience.

Bottom Line
There’s a lot that could be disappointing when compared with its sibling the Zenfone 8. However, this phone is mostly about the futuristic camera design. Its real value will depend on how important photos and selfies are to you.
Android Authority says, “Upon first impressions, the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip packs a functional camera design, premium build quality, and an incredibly large battery to the table. I was quite impressed with Zen UI as a skin, and the full-screen display is just such a joy to use.”
TechAdvisor states, “The ZenFone 8 Flip retains the creative motorized camera system, but a lack of features compared to the cheaper, smaller ZenFone 8 make it a harder sell than ever before.”
What the Critics Are Saying...

- Lynn Anderson, DxOMarkThe Asus Zenfone 8 Flip does not offer a very good charging experience, but provides more than 2 days of autonomy with moderate use.

- Paul Carroll, DxOMarkWith an overall score of 118, the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip is in the lower half of the ultra-premium ranking for Camera. Its global score is some ways behind such top-ranked devices as the Huawei P50 Pro and Xiaomi the Mi 11 Ultra, and its overall performance is more comparable to phones such as the Sams...

- Mike Wobker, NotebookcheckThe Asus Zenfone 8 Flip is a smartphone with a unique selling point. The swiveling camera leaves it without any competition if this feature is the driving purchase reason. It has the advantage especially for selfies that they can be taken in the quality of the main camera. However, the variable angl...

- Vyncent Chan, Pokde.NetThe ASUS Zenfone 8 Flip is a good device with the Flip Camera as its trump card, but lacks some key features that could have been easily added to make it a much better option for everyone.

- Luke Pollack, Android AuthorityThe Zenfone 8 Flip is essentially the Zenfone 7 with a new flagship processor. But otherwise, you're still getting a 90Hz OLED screen, 5,000mAh battery, 30W charging, and that flippy camera system. The latter allows you to take higher quality selfies with the main, telephoto, or ultra-wide sensors.
