The M55 is Plantronic's budget headset, but the price tag doesn't mean that it's cheaply made. Critics describe it as svelte and elegant noting that the glossy black surface and silver trim give it a premium look. It is also much lighter than many of its other competitors weighing in at a scant 8 grams. PC Mag adds, "After placing it…into my ear, I pretty much forgot it was even there."
The headset comes with a single silicone encased earbud with optional plastic hook. According to reviewers, the hook adds a sense of security but the M55 fits well enough that it is unnecessary. CNET mentions, however, that since it does not come in alternate sizes it might not work well with all ear sizes.
While the Plantronics M55 can stream music and YouTube audio, its main purpose is for making and receiving phone calls. In that respect, it delivers fairly good call quality. In general, most reviewers describe incoming calls as rich and full though a tad muffle and outgoing calls as thin and grainy. The device also features noise cancellation technology, but unlike the Jawbone Era the M55 does not utilize dual microphones. Slashgear points out that while call quality drops in crowded areas, "…at the price you're paying for the M55, the quality is excellent."
One standout feature of the M55 is its battery life. At top volume, expert tests clock the battery at 8 hours. To further preserve the battery, Plantronics offers a DeepSleep mode that automatically puts the headset to sleep when the paired device is out of range for 90 minutes. Tests show that the batteries last 150 days in this mode.
Despite a couple complaints, reviewers highly recommend this bluetooth headset. TechRadar calls it "great value for money" and goes on to say "we highly recommend it." Phone Arena adds, "All in all, the…headset is an impressive little gadget."
