Wireless speakers are evolving from portable convenience devices to high-class sound systems. While it is not the cheapest speaker on the market, the JBL Authentics L8 receives positive reviews from audiophiles and gadget fans alike. The specs from JBL state that it offers up to 120 watts of power across three speakers. This makes the speaker more of a speaker bar than a wireless speaker.
One of the most mentioned aspects in reviews is the design. Ershad Kaleebullah of NDTV Gadgets comments, “A spongy foam grille with a checkered pattern wraps around the front and sides of the speaker, immediately reminding us of a retro-futuristic piece of furniture.” Jesse James of StupidDope says, “We’ve seen a number of different designs and concepts released over the past few years, but nothing nearly as sleek and eye-catching as the latest design from JBL.”
Unfortunately, the distinctive look comes with one drawback—Both Ershad Kaleebullah and Ali Heriyanto of ChipChick noticed that the foam tends to collect dust. However, they also note that the foam grill is removable and cleanable should you need to do so.
Ershad notes, “The L8 is rather heavy, thus not practical as a portable speaker.” Fortunately, with the added size comes increased output and audio quality. He also states that the L8 "can pump some bass and how! Bass response is well pronounced and doesn't distort even at the loudest volume setting. Even the highs were really good.” The sound stage is equally impressive as Ali Heriyanto points out, “Proper positioning of the speaker is also ideal for the best direction of sound. However, the design allows for the speaker to fill the room with music.”
One major consideration to the L8, and its biggest louder brother the L16, is price. It is priced as high as many premium sound bars and entertainment systems. With a plethora of inputs, including DNLA and AirPlay support, the speaker can connect to virtually any device. This helps justify the price tag by allowing you to use it as a central speaker for multiple devices. Support for wireless Qi charging plates adds flexibility for charging your mobile devices as well.
Ari Heriyanto summarizes most reviews for this speaker when she says, “This is no run-of-the-mill wireless speaker – this is a full-fledged sound system that takes wireless systems to the next level.”
