Digital Trends

The Red Magic 5G does what it was built to do — play games — very well, and is decent value considering the hardware. However, outside of gaming, the phone disappoints on several fronts, including the camera, slow battery charging, and software.

You’re getting both flagship specs and the most affordable 5G phone officially available in the US today. The 144Hz display is beautiful, performance is top notch, battery life is excellent, and audio is great. Just understand all of that comes with lackluster shooters and buggy software. Then there’s the question of updates.

The RedMagic 5G is a smartphone designed for gaming - and it does this very well even over long distances. Non-gamer users will have to put up with some limitations. In terms of comfort, the slow and inaccurate fingerprint scanner in combination with the missing face-unlock functionality almost maneuvers the Nubia mobile phone into the age where there was no biometric authentication available for the user - very annoying.

It retains most of what made the previous phones unique, with the active cooling system, the RGB light strip, high refresh rate, and stereo speakers. I would also say the transition to a glass and metal sandwich ends up being good for the phone, as it feels more sturdy than the previous models, and I actually prefer the new implementation of the RGB lighting. The camera is also good enough for me, and the new sensors do add some versatility. However, the software experience is what holds the RedMagic back from perfection the most.

It has up to 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, so it will be able to handle everything you throw at it, and it has plenty of features that can greatly enhance your gaming experience. After all, this phone’s entire existence revolves around gaming. The shoulder triggers are greatly useful for several games where a touch interface may not sit as well, such as Fortnite and Call of Duty: Mobile. The integrated fan is better on a spec sheet than in real life, but if you use it correctly, it can help keep high temperatures at bay for longer.

The Red Magic 5G is all about gaming. And on that front it's got all the goods for success: top-drawer processing, great cooling, long-lasting battery life, a customisable gaming space, 144Hz display, shoulder triggers and optional additional controllers. But while it has that gaming goodness nailed, it's in its everyday form where the detail lacks: a behind-the-times fingerprint scanner, software that lacks refinement when it comes to customisation and notifications, chunky build that's a little taxing for typing. The Red Magic 5G is a gaming great. It just comes with some everyday use caveats.
