So this TCL device could easily be one of the best budget smartphones on the market. In terms of display quality, it already is. Yet the TCL 10L only costs around $250. If acceptable performance, camera experience, and battery life or charging are good enough. And if you happen to be looking for the...

If you don’t rely on the secondary cameras all that much, I’d say yeah. It performs very well, has an absolutely gorgeous screen, the battery life is bonkers and once you turn off some of the software nags, it’s a nice UI to use. But I also think that TCL really needs to pull their finger out on sec...

It's not an unusable phone by any means, the performance is solid, the camera is fairly versatile and the quality isn't terrible, and the battery life is pretty good. For me, it's TCL's own fault that the 10L feels so underwhelming. It costs €279 in Portugal, which is €50 below what the TCL Plex's l...

The TCL 10L is a solid first attempt. Performance was good, and the camera setup delivers value for the relatively low asking price. That said, there were areas that I found less impressive, including the heavy hand taken by TCL in customizing the software experience.

For the price bracket that it’s pitted at, the TCL 10L does a decent job. Sure, if you add more to the base of $249, you can get better camera, performance, style, uber chick looks, style, premium-ness. The bottom line of $249 needs to be hammered home, for you to appreciate the minimum features. In...

So this TCL device could easily be one of the best budget smartphones on the market. In terms of display quality, it already is. Yet the TCL 10L only costs around $250. If acceptable performance, camera experience, and battery life or charging are good enough. And if you happen to be looking for the best display around without flagship pricing, the TCL 10L will not disappoint. It's barely even a competition. Otherwise, it may be a good idea to wait for the first couple of updates to arrive.

It costs €279 in Portugal, which is €50 below what the TCL Plex's launch price of €329. That's a significant difference, but those €50 get you a better chipset, faster storage (and double the amount of storage), a much more premium design, and better cameras.

In our opinion, if you have the extra bucks, then the Pixel 3a could be a tad bit better, given the camera performance is also better.

If you can look past the all-plastic build, the dim screen in direct sunlight, and the lackluster ultrawide camera, the TCL 10L is a solid buy. We’d love to have stereo speakers for a more immersive video watching experience, though.

A modern phone for only $250, but there are trade-offs

Overall, the 10L is a good attempt at a budget phone, and while it doesn't have many flashy features, it admirably handles basic tasks and has an elegant design. For the price, it's a good rival to the Moto G Stylus.

With one caveat, I can recommend the TCL 10L. The only real questions in my mind have to do with software updates: How committed will TCL remain to the 10L, and how frequently will we get security patches? There are a few things folks might find bothersome, like TCL's overly-aggressive background app management and its heavier-than-necessary tweaks to stock Android. Still, we're willing to forgive a lot for $250, and this wasn't an unpleasant phone to use over the last few weeks. Someone on a strict budget that needs an emergency device can do more than just get by with this phone.
