The "1-Minute" Review

If screen quality isn’t critical to you, the Reno4 Z has a ridiculously affordable price and respectable specs to justify it.

The Oppo Reno4 Z is the cheapest and the chunkiest of the family of Oppo Reno4’s. Thicker, wider and taller than the other two models, the Oppo Reno4 and the Oppo Reno4 Pro, the Z is built with your wallet in mind.

The screen is flatter than the ones used on the other two models. This isn’t a big deal, however, it’s also an LCD instead of an OLED. This means it’s not as sharp or color is lacking compared to the Reno4 5G or Reno4 Pro 5G.

However, it has the highest refresh rate amongst the group at 120Hz.

The camera hub on the back is built in such a way that if not for the Oppo branding on its exterior, you might not have guessed it was related to the other two models of phone. It features a square bezel with lenses going diagonally across.

The Reno4 Z also has a different chipset from the Reno4 and Reno4 Pro, no doubt to minimize cost. It won’t top benchmarks or play the latest games at max settings, but reviewers found it capable enough.

With everything else on the phone being virtually the same, it’s an excellent phone that dodges the price concerns of its higher-end siblings.

Key differences:

  • 6.57-inch LCD with 120Hz refresh rate
  • Chunkier design than its siblings
  • 8GB of RAM (the same as Reno4 5G, less than the Reno4 Pro 5G)
  • Weaker processor
  • Much lower price

For most buyers, the most screens will be the most noticeable difference. It’s not a bad screen, but you will notice the difference between the screen on this phone and the other two models. Still, if the screen isn’t critical to you, it gives Oppo the ability to release the phone for a ridiculously affordable price.

What the Critics Are Saying...

The Reno4 Z 5G isn’t a bad phone when viewed in isolation. However, the mid-range market has moved on so much in such a short space of time that it now feels thoroughly outclassed, and you may be better off getting a Google Pixel 4a 5G instead.

A capable phone that won't let you down in all the ways that really matter. It'll snap a photo, let you play pretty much any of your favourite games, and go all day without an issue. But even at this end of the market it's not hugely competitive.

- Cam Bunton, Pocket-lint

The Oppo Reno4 Z 5G is a cheap 5G phone with a good main camera. The performance is also on class level and those who want a physical fingerprint sensor will also get their money's worth here. The somewhat less resistant casing is a bit annoying, and you can certainly get even faster Wi-Fi in other...

I have been using the OPPO Reno 4 Z now for some weeks and it is a really compelling device for the money and one to consider, the cost to performance ratio has been a win for the consumer now with mobiles phones over 1000 euros are a thing of the past and more a status symbol these days.

- Jim O Brien, Tech Buzz Ireland

If 5G is really important to you now or as some kind of future-proofing, and you're operating on a budget, perhaps the Reno4 Z 5G makes sense. After all, it is one of the more affordable handsets with next-gen connectivity available on a more or less global scale. To make 5G fit the budget, Oppo has...
