As the lowest-priced model in Motorola’s 2018 G-Series lineup, the G6 Play shares much of its design and many of its specs with it’s more costly sibling -- the G6. But it’s not a matter of a simple downgrade or cut in price, the Play variant also brings a few unique perks to the table as well.
While reviewers found the overall experience similar to that of the G6, there’s a few notable differences:
- A lower resolution screen at 1440-by-720 pixels
- Less RAM at 2 to 3GB depending on the model
- A slightly slower 1.4Ghz octa-core Snapdragon 427 processor
- Less storage with 16 to 32GB available depending on your region
Overall, reviewers found the phone handled basic daily tasks, such as checking email, scrolling through Twitter, or streaming video with no problems. Gaming wasn’t as good with the phone struggling to play intensive games at high quality.
However, reviewers considered the camera the biggest downside to the phone compared to the rest of the series. With a single lens 13MP rear camera, it simply cannot compete with the dual-lens model in the pricier G6 or G6 Plus. Yet, the cameras on those models didn’t exactly get rave reviews either.
The biggest upside -- and perhaps the biggest overall difference -- is the phone’s battery. The 4000mAh cell is one of the largest available currently and even dwarfs some of the flagships out there. Reviewers hit two to three days on a single charge. Pair that with TurboCharge support and you should never have to worry about battery life with the G6 Play.
So while performance is slightly scaled back from the standard G6, you’ll get exceptional battery life. Ultimately, reviewers recommend the phone for anyone looking for a budget-friendly phone and don’t need top of the line performance and features.
The phone shares many qualities with its pricier sibling, if you want to know about the design, software, and features, be sure to check out the summary for the Motorola G6.
