As the larger sibling to the Huawei P20, the P20 Pro adds a few bells and whistles to their already-solid 2018 flagship option.
The phone features the same metal and glass design as the P20, but it’s IP67 rated for water resistance -- a welcome addition to many reviewers.
It’s also bigger as the screen increases to 6.1 inches. The P20 Pro also sports an AMOLED panel instead of the TFT LCD found in the P20. The resolution is the same (2,240-by-1,080) so while slightly less sharp than the P20, it’s nothing you’d notice in normal usage.
Reviewers felt the display on the P20 Pro offered richer colors and better contrast than the P20.
While the phone includes the same Kirin 970 octa-core processor, it sees a boost to 6GB of RAM. As expected, this makes for silky smooth performance and improved response times when multitasking or using resource-intensive apps.
The biggest upgrade between the P20 and P20 Pro is in the camera. Not content with the dual-lens options hitting the market now, Huawei uses a tri-lens rear camera. It packs in a 40MP main lens with A.I.-assisted image stabilization, an 8MP telephoto lens, and a 20MP monochrome lens.
This means you can enjoy 3x optical zoom with no protruding lens. The monochrome lens helps to create bokeh effects and add detail to shots.
Reviews for the camera are stellar. Its AI auto mode does a great job of tweaking settings to match your subject and surroundings. The tri-lens array also performs well in low-light scenarios.
Lastly, the P20 Pro sees a boost in battery capacity to a massive 4,000mAh. Paired with Type-C fast charging, reviewers never worried about battery life. If you watch videos or play games for hours, you might need to charge nightly. However, with typical mixed usage, the phone offers enough power to get through a day with ease and well into another.
While most of the changes don’t impact the core experience of using the phone for basic tasks and daily communications, most reviewers felt like the added cost of the P20 Pro was well worth -- budget allowing.
