Huawei has turned heads with their budget-friendly feature-filled smartphones. The Ascend G6 aims to offer an even better balance of price and performance to bring 4G phones to the masses. Does the phone live up to its claims? Let's take a look at the reviews!
There is nothing fancy about the construction of the device. It is plastic through and through. However, many reviews applauded the lightweight design and the clean edges. Many even compared it to the iPhone 4. Trusted Reviews stated "feels really nice in the hand and slips easily into the pocket." For a budget phone, it appears to have plenty of design flair.
The Ascend G6 features a 4.5-inch, 960-by-540 pixel IPS LCD. The IPS design allows for better outdoor viewing angles and color reproduction. Most reviews of the display were positive, although some noted a slight oversaturation in colors. If you're worried about the resolution being a bit low, Trusted Reviews stated "sharpness and clarity is perfectly acceptable for watching video and reading web pages."
Pushing the display and the Android 4.3 OS is a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor with 1GB RAM. This has become a standard spec list for the mid-range market. Accordingly, reviews applauded performance of the device. PC World says, "Using this smartphone reminds you how fun the basics can be when they’re done right." TechRadar noted, "mobile browsing speed and load times were excellent."
Unlike many cheaper smartphones, the G6 includes a 5MP front-facing camera for high-quality selfies. In general, reviews of the camera were positive. However, most mentioned needing to play with settings to get a clear shot. The 8MP camera on the rear of the device received similar reviews with Trusted Reviews calling the images captured "good but not fantastic."
If there was anything to knock about the phone, it would the internal storage. At just 4GB available, a MicroSD card will be a must for most owners.
All of this is powered by a 2000mAh battery. While this might pale in comparison to high-end phones, the lower power hardware included in the phone help to offer plenty of battery life. All reviews noted a full days use from the phone without problems.
In all, the Ascend G6 receives high marks in its price bracket. Phandroid said it is "definitely a worthy device for those looking to get an affordable smartphone." PC World went further, stating, "Few products balance software, style and value-for-money as effortlessly."
What the Critics Are Saying...
- Anil Satapathy, The Mobile IndianThe Huawei Ascend G6 has no eye-catching property unlike many of its competitors. It has decent design as well as offers good performance. However, the features it offers can be found even in devices that cost half of it. Also, it has low display resolution as well as offers poor battery back up and...
- Michael Moser, NotebookcheckHuawei's Ascend G6 costs around 180 Euros and has quite a lot to offer at time of writing. First, its compact, rigid, and well-processed casing alongside the stylish design. The bright, viewing angle stable, 4.5-inch screen that remains well-legible even outdoors is also positive. Since it operates...
- Jeff Parsons, TechRadarIntroduction Huawei made a lot of noise last year launching its then-flagship Huawei Ascend P6, boasting that at 6.2mm thick it was the thinnest phone available at the time. A year later, the Chinese company is back with a scaled-down version called the Ascend G6, which it hopes will appeal to bud...
- Sandra Vogel, Beta NewsThe Huawei Ascend G6 is a lightweight yet robust handset. The headphone slot is poorly placed, but the rest of the design is pleasing. There are some nice software extras, and the price seems quite attractive until you consider the almost inevitably, the new 4G version of the Motorola Moto G.
- Chris Barraclough, RecombuEE’s Kestrel phone isn’t just the cheapest 4G phone around, it’s also one of the best budget phones we’ve fiddled with in 2014. The 4G support is a fantastic feature that no similarly priced mobiles can offer, and it’s backed up by a slick all-round mobile experience.
