have tried above instructions but still can not add to favorites.

On my T-Mobile Galaxy S 2, there is no star next to the name in the contacts list. Now what??

Try this -- from the home screen tap on Contacts then choose a contact. You should see a star located just the right of the contact name. Tap on the star to add that contact as a favourite.
