The X7 provided plenty of pleasant moments, showcasing a smooth and clear sound signature, and more power than its size would suggest.

What's good

  • Stream over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Ethernet
  • No distortion at maximum volume
  • Smooth and clean audio quality

What's bad

  • Frustrating pairing over Wi-Fi
  • Loses sound potency when unplugged
  • Middling bass

The Sony SRS-X7 is part of Sony's wireless speaker lineup and offers features not found on other models. In addition to Bluetooth connectivity, the X7 also has the option to stream over Wi-Fi via Apple Airplay and it comes with an Ethernet port for non-wireless devices. Although experts note that the sound quality over Wi-Fi was better than Bluetooth, they also mention that it was much harder to pair the device over Wi-Fi. CNET states, "The setup seems fairly simple…but if you run into any snafus…you can end [up] not making a connection and becoming frustrated."

Despite a slightly better audio quality over Wi-Fi, critics were generally pleased with the Bluetooth sound. Even when turning it up to the maximum volume, they didn't notice any distortion though PC Mag states, "the speaker lacks both bass response and volume in general." Still, reviewers describe the sound as smooth and clean for the most part when plugged into a power source.

When running on its internal battery, however, most noticed a dramatic shift in audio quality. While the bass response was middling plugged in, critics noticed a significant drop off that essentially cut the low end force in half. On the higher range, they also noticed some loss of vocals, but for the most part it was not as drastic as the bass.

Overall, reviews were a bit mixed for the SRS-X7. Sound Guys states, "The Sony SRS-X7 is an excellent sounding speaker and a worthy choice." On the other hand, Digital Trends says that while the X7 "provided plenty of pleasant sonic moments", it was "a little late to the party, and may need another evolution to compete."
