What Hi-Fi

A decent but slightly clinical sounding, compact wireless speaker

For a wireless speaker of this size, you won’t find a clearer, more precise sound. But the Formation Flex is expensive and we think Bowers & Wilkins needs to sort out the software, including a proper, all-encompassing Formation app, before we can wholeheartedly recommend it.

The smallest speaker in Bowers & Wilkins’s new Formation lineup, the Flex, still sounds big. The combination of design, sound quality and price (and lack of a built-in voice assistant) means that the Flex is definitely not your run-of-the-mill entry-level speaker – not everybody is going to buy it. But those who do are going to be blown away with the way it sounds (and looks). Just make sure it’s in an area where you can play it loud.

Powerful audio output but overpriced

The Bowers & Wilkins Formation Flex is an attractive, powerful wireless speaker, but you can find similar audio quality for less money.

More than a Sonos rival

Bowers & Wilkins may not be the first to market with new technologies but it generally bides its time well, combining its audio expertise with streaming technologies that have matured well enough to bear its badge. From what we've heard of the Formation Flex, it looks to have benefitted from that strategy again.

We're impressed with the Bowers & Wilkins Formation Flex so far, thanks to its high audio fidelity and sculptural design. It may be pricey compared to the competition but it's the cheapest entry-point to the Formation range.

Bowers & Wilkins’s Formation series is at the premium end of the scale for wireless home music systems. However, every single one we have tested outperforms its competitor by a pretty big margin. You definitely get what you pay for with Formation! The Flex brings great Bowers & Wilkins sound down to a much more affordable price point and it takes up less space than a CD case sitting on your desk. Flex can be the beginning point of a great whole-house wireless music system that is fun to use and a joy to the eyes and ears!
