The "1-Minute" Review

Verdict

If you have simple needs -- such as unblocking sites -- then VPN Unlimited fits the bill. However, if you want more features and control over your settings, you’re better looking elsewhere.

What's good

  • Affordable pricing
  • Very secure encryption protocol with AES-256
  • Excellent customer service
  • Bitcoin support
  • Unblocks streaming services like Netflix and iPlayer

What's bad

  • Session logging
  • No kill switch on Windows
  • Performance a bit slow
  • Have to add/remove device from site for multi-device use
  • P2P only supported in 5 countries

While not the biggest name in the VPN game, what VPN Unlimited lacks in servers it makes up for in useful features. Is it the right VPN for you? Let’s see what others have to say.

Pricing

VPN Unlimited is priced near the average of other services when comparing monthly rates. However, if you’re willing to commit to multiple years, you’ll see significant savings. If you find the service to your liking, their lifetime plan is by far the best deal.

VPN Unlimited also offers a 7 day no-strings free trial if you want to check out speeds and features for yourself.

Supported Devices

You can use VPN Unlimited on a variety of devices. There are official clients for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, Windows Phone, and Apple TV. It even has browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

Ease of Use

VPN Unlimited’s software is incredibly easy to use according to reviewers. Once you launch the app, you’re one click away from anonymous browsing. There’s also a sidebar that allows you to find exactly what you need, making it perfect for people who are just getting started with VPNs.

The Best VPN states, “... This easy to use dashboard will provide everything that you need and more.”

Simultaneous Connections

Depending on the subscription tier you choose, VPN Unlimited 5 or 10 simultaneous connections.

But that doesn’t mean you can simultaneously connect any 5 or 10 devices. VPN Unlimited has 5 or 10 ‘slots’ you can assign to specific devices or browser extensions. Once you fill these slots you need to sign into their site and delete a device if you want to add a new one.

It’s a bit inconvenient -- especially when competing VPN services allow you simultaneous connection from any combination of devices.

Included Features

Besides the standard anonymous browsing, VPN Unlimited also offers:

  • Video streaming (Netflix, etc)
  • Bitcoin payments
  • DNS leak protection
  • The ability to automatically disable the VPN on whitelisted networks
  • Kill switch for Android and Mac apps

While reviewers welcomed these features, they were let down that VPN Unlimited did not provide things like a kill switch for Windows, direct L2TP support, OpenVPN tweaks, or even a manual server selector.

If you use P2P services, such as Bittorrent, you might want to look elsewhere. Although VPN Unlimited technically supports P2P, they note that they may "subside connection speeds due to torrenting." So, while critics aren’t sure exactly how they would know who is using P2P, you might face throttling if VPN Unlimited detects that you are.

More importantly, they only support P2P on 5 servers (Canada, USA, France, Luxembourg, and Romania). Outside of these servers, you can use P2P but you’ll see very slow speeds.

Privacy and Logging

As you would hope, VPN Unlimited uses only the strongest VPN protocols -- most notably OpenVPN combined with AES-256 encryption. This is the same encryption used by federal agencies to transmit sensitive information.

There’s also IKEv2 if you want something else or you can use KeepSolid’s Wise technology for added protection. However, reviewers note that using Wise technology resulted in a slight dip in speed despite helping them bypass VPN detection and blocking systems.

And while the desktop app doesn’t have specific DNS leak protection settings, when tested with different tools, expert didn’t find any leaks.

On the logging side of things, reviewers were disappointed with VPN Unlimited’s lack of transparency.

Reviewers dug through the Privacy Policy and found that VPN Unlimited collects total amounts of web traffic and dates for each session. You can view these logs yourself through their web console.

More troubling is the fact that they might collect technical non-personal information in the background. When experts dug deeper, they found that VPN Unlimited recorded their computer name and the name of their Windows user account.

Performance

In reviewer tests, VPN Unlimited provided generally reliable connections. However, it took them 5 seconds longer than other VPNs to establish a connection.

Once connected, transfer speeds were a mixed bag.

For the most part, reviewers could get decent ping times and minimal latency -- though latency still lagged behind competing services.

Reviewers also found performance outside of the US and Europe inconsistent due to the lack of nearby servers.

Support

24/7 customer support doesn’t mean much if they don’t respond to you quickly. Luckily, reviewers were very pleased with response times, with most receiving a response in less than 20 minutes consistently.

Better still, the responses they received were detailed with links to relevant documents.

While reviewers wished VPN Unlimited offered live chat support, they were happy enough with the speed and overall response they received.

The Takeaway

While there are definitely some issues with VPN Unlimited -- especially with their P2P speeds and logging -- reviewers recommend it for people who have simple needs and a limited budget.

TechRadar states, “KeepSolid [VPN Unlimited] offers decent performance for a fair price, and apps run on almost everything…

Yes, I do recommend using VPN Unlimited. It seemed to work very well with US Netflix, but it allows torrenting on its 5 servers only. But the most important aspect is its jurisdiction. KeepSolid VPN is based in the US, which has strict data retention laws. It is available for all devices except for...
