Sony’s first smart speaker is a mixed bag. At its core, it’s a balanced speaker that delivers the full Google Assistant experience to your home. Like the Google Home, the LF-S50G is a companion to your everyday life in a smart speaker format: It has the ability to control your smart home and keep your kids entertained with fun audio-based games.

The Sony S50G finds a way to distinguish itself amongst the competition with clear sound, unique motion gestures, and a clock. The biggest problem is the unique motion gestures are also uniquely frustrating. After several attempts, you’ll probably end up never using them again much like myself.

A great alternative to the traditional Google Home. It has better sound quality and is somewhat more versatile. The Bluetooth connection works quite well and opens the field to more devices that have nothing to do with our Google Account, such as friend's smartphones. Splashproof certified and your watch is perfect for the kitchen or bathroom, a great companion for singing in the shower or while you're cooking.

Unless you're really into the idea of gesture controls, I'd pretty much ignore the fact that this speaker has them. They don't work well enough to be a point worth considering. That leaves just a few remaining feature advantages over other speakers: the clock, the sound quality, and the IPX3 water resistance.

The Sony LF-S50G comparatively is a great speaker, while it won’t challenge the HomePod for outright sound quality (at half the price, that’s not surprising), for the size, weight and value on offer here, it should absolutely be on your short list.

It is a very capable alarm clock – but then again, so is a Google Home or Home Mini, though you definitely get better sound quality from the Sony.

Sony’s LF-S50G is a fine little speaker. It's just too bad that the digital clock display that gave me flashbacks to my old alarm clock comes with a side of poorly-executed gesture controls.

The Sony LF-S50G is a great looking speaker that just happens to have the Google Assistant built-in. It does streaming audio really well, not to mention the LF-S50G would look really good on a bookshelf in your living room or even on your desk at work. It’s hard to go wrong with the LF-S50G.
