1. DOSS Soundbar Touch

Best Overall

Pros: Balanced sound, sturdy build quality, plenty of inputs, decent battery life
Cons: No water resistance, annoying voice prompts

Featuring a sleek, wrap-around design and backlit touch controls on the top, the DOSS SoundBox Touch doesn’t look like a $30 Bluetooth speaker. Better still, according to reviewers, it doesn’t sound like one either.

It comes with a bounty of inputs, including a 3.5-mm headphone jack and microSD card support if you don’t want to use it wirelessly. Most reviewers also pulled a solid 9 to 10 hours of battery life from a single charge--something you might not find in a speaker two to three times its price.

There were a few minor annoyances though. While it’s light enough to take with you on the road or on the patio, there’s no water resistance at all. So keep it away from rain and think twice before heading to the pool.

What Others Are Saying...
The DOSS SoundBox Touch gets high marks with a 4.4 star rating out of 5 on Amazon and more than 7,700 reviews. It’s also an Amazon’s Choice pick. One customer writes: “This little speaker is amazing. I’m not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, but I know good sound when I hear it.”

The pick was also a favorite with The Wirecutter and Audiorumble. Wirecutter had previously made it their budget pick in their 2018 “The Best Portable Bluetooth Speaker” roundup.

Reviewers at Audiorumble say: “DOSS Touch might not feature groundbreaking performance, however, it does bring a certain amount of style. Some of its features are anything but common in this segment of the market. As such, it's a great choice for any budget user.”

Bottom Line...
With a sturdy design, generous features, and well-balanced audio, this budget-friendly pick challenged reviewer expectations in the sub-$50 market.

2. JBL Clip 2

Best Waterproof Speaker

Pros: Ultra portable, sturdy design, can be paired with other speakers, waterproof
Cons: Minor distortion at full volume, weak bass

The JBL Clip series has remained a top choice for ultra-portable speakers--with its Clip and Clip+ impressing reviewers. With their latest update, the Clip 2 tacks on full IPX7 waterproofing and upgrades the signature clip from plastic to metal.

The speaker is rather small--measuring just 3.7-inches in diameter. This round design also makes it more resistant to impacts. Despite the small size, it can crank out a decent amount of volume--though it lacks a bit of bass.

For larger areas--or more volume--you can connect multiple speakers together. There’s also an integrated 3.5-mm audio cable for connecting to non-Bluetooth devices. Combined with an 8-hour battery life, this waterproof mini speaker is ready for a day at the lake, gym, or pool.

What Others Are Saying…
The JBL Clip 2 gets great marks on Amazon. It has a 4.4 rating with nearly 900 reviews. One reviewer says, “Sounds great for the size, and it's crazy rugged without being bulky. Great for biking or hiking!”

This pick ranked highly with both Amazon and The Wirecutter. It’s a current Amazon Choice pick. PC Magazine gave it an Editor’s Choice award.

Michael Gowan from Tom’s Guide notes: “With improved sound quality, ruggedness and battery life, the Clip 2 is the best inexpensive ultraportable speaker available now.”

Bottom Line...
If portability or waterproofing are high on your list, the Clip 2 offers an experience few competitors can match.

3. AmazonBasics Nano Bluetooth Speaker

Best Budget Option

Pros: Splashproof, excellent audio quality for the size, price
Cons: Minor distortion at full volume, 6 hour battery life

While this isn’t the most powerful pick on the list, reviewers were thoroughly impressed with the sheer volume this little silicon pod could put out. It’s also splash-proof, though there’s no specific certification listed--so watch out for heavy moisture. Reviewers found the strap a trustworthy, sturdy way to attach the speaker to backpacks, belt loops, purse straps, bicycles, and other items for on-the-go listening.

Should you need to make or take a quick call, the speaker includes a mic. Unfortunately, reviewers found the quality hit-or-miss. So it won’t replace a standalone speakerphone or better Bluetooth speaker.

There are a few shortcomings. Obviously, with the small size, it will not fill a room like a larger speaker. The controls are also minimal and don’t provide full control of music or media playback--so you must keep your phone, tablet or laptop nearby to shuffle tracks or the like.

What Others Are Saying...
The AmazonBasics Nano Bluetooth Speaker carries a 4.0 rating with more than 600 reviews over at Amazon. One reviewer says, “I travel in an RV. This is a great space saver for my music. I also hang it on my bike when I ride my bike to the beaches. It lasts hours and comes with a USB to recharge.”

This pick ranked in the Top 5 for Lifehacker’s 2016 “Best Cheap Bluetooth Speakers.” It’s also mentioned as a competitor in The Wirecutter’s 2018 “Best Portable Bluetooth Speakers” rankings.

Brent Butterworth of The Wirecutter says, “Unlike most ultracheap Bluetooth speakers, it has a full, balanced sound… If you need a cheap stocking stuffer, or want a speaker for backpacking and hiking, it’s a great choice.”

Bottom Line...
While it’s not for audiophiles, the small footprint and rock-bottom price makes the AmazonBasics Nano a real gem with few competitors.

4. OontZ Angle 3

Best for Volume

Pros: Plenty of volume, triangle design keeps speaker in place, IPX5 water resistance
Cons: Sound slightly shrill at higher volumes, lower than average battery life

OontZ is known for powerful speakers and fun designs for an affordable price. The Angle 3 is no exception. Its triangle design helps it stand out from other speakers at a similar price. But it also helps to keep the speaker firmly planted when cranking the volume.

While it is not waterproof, the IPX5 rating is good enough for splashes during showers or poolside use and the occasional rainstorm should leave the speaker unscathed. It also features rubberized ends that should help prevent damage if the speaker takes a spill.

Reviewers pulled 8 hours from a single charge with ease. However, many noted slow charge times. Charge it at night if you plan to use it regularly. It also allows you to quickly swap between paired devices with a quick button press if you want to use it as a speakerphone while watching movies on your tablet or let friends control the music mix at a party.

What Others Are Saying...
The OontZ Angle 3 has a stellar reputation on Amazon. With a massive 24,000 reviews, the speaker enjoys a 4.4 rating. It’s also an Amazon’s Choice pick. One review said, “The OontZ Angle 3 is a very solid speaker, that now has outstanding volume and good bass. It retains and actually improves upon the crisp highs and strong mids of its predecessor. I like that Cambridge Soundworks is actually focusing on sound quality and not loading up on tons of features.”

Android Central reviewed the speaker and were impressed. Reviewer Brent Zaniewski said, “The OontZ Angle 3 Bluetooth Speaker is a powerful sounding unit for its compact size and is a great addition to any water related activity.”

Audiorumble was also a fan, saying, “Cambridge SoundWorks OontZ Angle 3 represents a very generous package that is extremely affordable, comes with all the core features as well as performance. If you need a simple Bluetooth speaker, this is it.”

Bottom Line...
If you like your audio loud and don’t mind sacrificing a bit of battery life, the OontZ Angle 3 is a great pick.

5. AmazonBasics BTV1

Best Design

Pros: Minimalist design, great battery life, solid build quality, balanced sound
Cons: Glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet, not waterproof or water resistant

In the budget market, many speakers try to stand out with bright colors and bold designs. There’s nothing wrong with that. But sometimes you want something that can sit in the background and not attract attention. While there’s an element of subjectivity to design, we think the AmazonBasics BTV1 offers the best appearance in the sub-$50 market.

The controls on the top of the speaker are large enough to hit at a glance but don’t stand out. The power light is a simple LED. The grill has an angular texture to provide a splash of visual appeal. Reviewers seem to agree that this creates a more upscale appearance rarely found in this price range.

Of course, it has to perform as a speaker too. Fortunately, the speaker received high marks for audio quality--though the more “natural” sound might not appeal to bass lovers. It also offers roughly 15 hours on a single charge--one of the longest playback times on our list. Other features include speakerphone support and a 3.5-mm headphone jack.

What Others Are Saying...
This speaker enjoys a 4.1 rating with nearly 3,200 reviews on Amazon. One reviewer said, “The buttons are good sized and placed well for me. It feels very solid in hand. Not a brick with large magnets on the speakers. Just solid like it won't fall apart. I ran several types of music through it. Some with a lot of bass and at full volume on both my iPhone and the speaker. It did not distort the music at all for me.”

The speaker was previously the budget pick for The Wirecutter. While it didn’t make the cut this year, it still received an honorable mention in the competitor listing.

In a review for CNet, David Carnoy says, “AmazonBasics Portable Bluetooth Speaker BTV1 is one of the better ‘generic’ wireless Bluetooth speakers I've tested. There's nothing terribly exciting or special about it, but it gets points for being modestly priced while sounding decent and avoiding looking cheap.”

Bottom Line...
Reviewers have plenty of praise for this speaker at its debut price of $60. Now that it’s half the price, there’s even more to love about this premium looking budget Bluetooth speaker.

Also Good...

The following speakers didn’t make our list but they came close.

Still, they offer value in the sub-$50 market and make solid runner-up options if one of the others isn’t in stock or doesn’t interest you.

Anker SoundCore 2 - $39.99 - The SoundCore 2 missed making this list by a hair. It combines a powerful set of speakers with a durable, water-resistant design and a staggering 24-hour battery life. We definitely expect to see Anker on the charts again soon. Read Review | See Latest Price

Braven 105 - $39.98 - With a pod design similar to the JBL Clip 2 and AmazonBasics Nano, the Braven 105 offers a full IPX7 waterproof rating, rich audio, and roughly 8 hours of playback on a single charge. We were tempted to include this as a pick, but as one of the most recent releases, there’s too little feedback out there to know if it holds up compared to the bigger names here. Read Review | See Latest Price

Polk Boom Bit - $29.99 - This speaker surprised reviewers with the amount of sound it cranked out of a tiny package. It’s easily the smallest speaker in this roundup. Unfortunately, with a battery life of only 3 hours, it didn’t make our main list. However, if you’re looking for something for the morning jog or walking the dog, it might be a great option. Read Review | See Latest Price
