What's good

  • Excellent sound quality
  • Small size for portability
  • Sync with up to 6 different devices

What's bad

  • Cannot charge via microUSB
  • No speakerphone capability

The Bose SoundLink Mini is, as the name suggests, a smaller version of the Bose SoundLink speaker. It measures 18 x 5 x 6 cm (7.1 x 2 x 2.3 inches) and weighs 680 grams. Although this is slightly bulkier than other mini Bluetooth speakers, reviewers still found it portable enough to be carried around in a backpack or handbag, though they mainly found it convenient to use around the house as it cannot be charged via the microUSB port. Instead, the SoundLink Mini comes included with the desktop charging cradle as well as an AC adapter that plugs directly into the device.

As with other portable speakers, the SoundLink Mini is Bluetooth enabled. It can remember up to six different devices and will automatically pair up when its within Bluetooth range.

Design-wise, the speaker's appearance is described as fairly plain with its metal grill face and aluminum shell. At 680 grams, this product is a bit heftier than its competitors, but Bose explains that the weight is due to large magnets that improve the bass. 9to5mac backs up this claim stating, "They are right, the bass on this thing is no joke…" Still, as a small speaker, experts do caution that the quality of the bass cannot compete with larger models. In general, reviewers were pleased with the sound quality describing it as very solid though they did notice the occasional popping at higher volumes.

Although it does its job well as a regular speaker, critics were a bit turned off by the fact that it doesn't have a mic and cannot be used as a speakerphone. Most mentioned that, while they do not use the feature often on similar devices, the lack of it could be a deal breaker for some consumers. Aside from this, reviewers were a bit put off by the fact that other additions such as a protective sleeve were not included and were also very expensive.

Despite a couple drawbacks, most reviews show that people are sufficiently impressed with the speaker and have no problem recommending it. Trusted Review states, "The Bose SoundLink Mini is portable, convenient, very well-made and powerful for its size." PC Mag goes on to say, "…it offers the best all-around sound quality we've seen in its category…"
