Don’t be fooled by the name, the Amazfit Bip is not an Amazon watch -- it’s developed by the Chinese manufacturer Huami. You might not have heard of them, but the company is the largest wearable device company in the world. If you’ve been thinking about a smartwatch but don’t want to spend a lot of money, the Bip might be worth looking into.

On first glance, the Bip looks quite a lot like the Apple Watch but you’ll notice the differences once you look closer. Instead of metal, Huami opted for a polycarbonate chassis with a matte finish. This makes it lightweight at only 31 grams.

While using plastic might seem cheap, it provides a decent build quality. An IP68 rating means you can submerge it in up to 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes.

The 1.28-inch 176-by-176 resolution display isn’t anything to write home about. Screen quality is akin to old Pebble smartwatches with low-res icons, numbers, and letters. The large bezels surrounding the screen make the Bip seem almost toy-like. It’s not classy or sleek like the Apple Watch or Samsung Gear S3 but some reviewers were happy with the more utilitarian look.

The biggest draw of the screen is that it’s always on. This makes it much faster to check whatever vitals you want at a glance. And, thanks to its overall brightness, it’s easy to read in any lighting situation.

Like other smartwatches, the Bip provides several apps to help you keep track of your fitness, including a heart rate monitor, sleep monitor, and a fitness tracker. Unfortunately, there’s limited third-party app support. So the apps that come preloaded on your watch are about all you can use.

You also can’t respond to texts or emails from your watch, though you can read them. If you’re used to doing everything from your watch, the Bip might feel like quite a downgrade.

When tested against other smartwatches, critics found the Bip to be mostly accurate -- though it hit the max heart rate faster and took longer to drop its heart rate reading. Despite this, they found it provided accurate performance.

The biggest draw of the Bip is its battery life. The 190mAh battery provided critics with a whopping 45 days of moderate use. That blows away any and all smartwatch competition. Even with consistent use of the GPS and heart rate monitor, they managed two weeks on a single charge.

For the price, reviewers are more than happy to recommend the Amazfit Bip. CNet states, “The Amazfit Bip just might be the perfect ‘I don’t care about smartwatches’ smartwatch... It works, it’s fine, and it’s surprisingly hassle-free.” TechRadar adds, “... the Bip is... an impressive offering from a relatively unknown company. It’s smart, comfortable, capable, and best of all, it’s a cheap way to get into effective fitness tracking.”
