Motorola proved the naysayers wrong and got this whole crazy cell phone business started back in the 1980’s when they produced “The Brick”, a large, um, ‘portable’ cell phone that was short on looks, but worked!
Shortly thereafter, business really took off when Motorola came out with the StarTac, a sexy flip that was futuristic by anyone’s standards at the time and a huge seller.
Since those early days, Motorola has continued to produce numerous and popular phones, including the extremely successful Razr, a model which ushered in the “thin” fad.
Unfortunately, Motorola has hit hard times during the past couple years with a combination of record losses, an exodus of top CEO’s and ultimately the company being put up for sale.
Motorola is based in Schaumburg, Illinois and was founded in 1928 as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation.

This svelte budget offering has curves and specifications in all of the right places and offers up a solid user experience. Issues with performance and a mediocre camera prevent it from being an instant recommendation however, despite the excellent price.

The Moto E5 Play is a true budget phone that won’t wow you, but does offer a compelling value thanks to its low price and a strong delivery on all of the smartphone basics. We’re not in don’t love with anything about it, but any gripes we have are promptly swept away by all the money you’ll save buying it.

With a big, bright display, quality build and strong performance, the Moto G6 Plus blurs the line between budget and mid-range smartphone. Whether it represents a sufficient leap forward from the brilliant Moto G6 is another matter, however.

With the Moto G6, Motorola is well and truly back on form. If you’re in the market for a phone at around this price, the only alternative you should consider is its slightly more expensive sibling, the G6 Plus, which is faster, has slightly longer battery life, and a better display.

Of course, you get a slightly larger display, but there’s also double the storage as standard, marginally improved everyday performance and a bigger battery. At £269, some might argue you’re veering away from budget territory – but either way you slice it, you’re still getting great value for money.

A fantastic deal, and a great phone for the money
Motorola Moto G6 Plus
The design is smart and lightweight; the screen is big and sharp; battery life is solid and fast charging impressive; you get twin camera lenses and a decent portrait mode, along with a bunch of gimmicky camera modes that are less reliable but lots of fun.

It looks the part, has a super camera for the price, and performance – on balance – isn’t too shabby, especially in the battery department. The only thing keeping it from the full five-star rating is that you can get the Moto G5S on the cheap now, and, if you can stretch to it, £50 extra for the Moto G6 offers a lot more bang for the buck.

The Moto G6-series phones are great – and the company continues this trend with the Moto G6 Play. This phones offers excellent value and is mostly a joy to use. And if battery life is your primary concern, the Play is actually a better choice than its higher-end brothers.

At just £219, Motorola is offering a fantastic phone in terms of combining design, specs and software. It might not be waterproof, but a water repellent coating is better than nothing and the G6 looks and feels much more expensive than it really is.
