Truly wireless earbuds are coming into their own as other manufacturers jump into the market. Sony’s initial attempt -- the WF-1000X earbuds -- failed to impress. With their new release -- the Sony WF-SP700N -- Sony is taking a second attempt at creating a truly wireless, fitness-focused earbud option. But does the experience match the price that often comes with the lack of wires?

Looking at the earbuds, you might mistake them for a pair of older Bluetooth headsets. They’re not exactly subtle with their round pill-like design. However, the lightweight plastic bulbs are IPX4 rated for sweat and water resistance. They should hold up to a good workout or a jog in the light rain. Just don’t take them in the pool or sauna.

The headphones include a set of silicon wings and tips to help you find a good fit. Reviewers had no issues with discomfort during extended use or with earbuds falling out during intense workouts.

When you’re not using the headphones, they slot into a charging case. Reviews on the case were mixed. While some liked the sliding top used to keep your headphones safe, others questioned durability and had issues with the case opening. Some loved the snug fit of the buds in the case while others found them hard to place and remove.

The case’s size was one area where reviewers agreed -- it’s a bit large. While you can throw your case into a bag or backpack, don’t expect to tote them around in your pocket.

On the sound front, reviewers found the earbuds very bass heavy. However, they noted that this didn’t drown out the lows and mids. You’ll find basic EQ in the companion app, but with no LDAC or AptX HD support, don’t expect an audiophile experience.

While the earbuds tout active noise cancellation, reviewers struggled to notice a difference apart from the noise isolation of the earbuds themselves. So if you’re looking for a pair of earbuds for a noisy environment, these might not fit your needs.

Also, in crowded places, the earbuds dropped connection -- both between each other and the phone. This left reviewers frustrated as audio bounced from ear to ear or disappeared completely.

Further aggravating issues, there appears to be a slight delay on the audio. This makes watching video using the headphones less than ideal.

A single charge offers three hours of battery life. The case can also store an additional two charges. This makes them perfect for a good workout or a run around the city, but less ideal for all-day use.

Overall, the reviews were mixed. While the WF-SP700N is an improvement over previous models, many felt that the price didn’t match what you get in the box. TechRadar summed up opinions well, saying, “... While the WF-SP700N are a decent sophomore attempt, you might be better waiting to see what Sony has planned for year three.”
