It's a reliable, full-featured fitness tracker that also offering some advanced smartwatch features like solid notification management and NFC payments. There are some shortcomings like the charger and Spotify-only controls, and the price is a bit high at $150, especially with a device like the Versa 2 going for $200 (or much less at times). But if you prefer a light-weight, more classic fitness tracker over a full-blown, bulky smartwatch, the Charge 4 is the way to go.

There’s some pretty solid functionality here to allow the Fitbit Charge 4 to be called a health tracker. While the activity tracking isn’t as comprehensive as many would like it to be, for many users it covers everything they need with a touch extra thrown in. The ability to receive, read and give some somewhat limited responses is fantastic for a device that lands in this price range.

The addition of built-in GPS makes the Charge 4 an even better fitness device for serious athletes and active zone minutes gives all users a new motivational tool by quantifying time spent in elevated heart rate zones. The Charge 4 also adds Fitbit Pay as a standard feature, so users won’t have to shell out more money for NFC tech anymore. The device has some small problems, namely music controls that only work for Spotify and fewer smart capabilities than the Fitbit’s smartwatches, but it’s otherwise an excellent fitness tracker with an approachable $150 price tag.

The Charge 4 is pretty much like the Charge 3, just much better value. Along with the aforementioned features, I can also use it to set timers or an alarm, check the weather, and get reminders for my daily agenda. The heart rate measurements are consistent with what I got from Apple's and Garmin's devices, too. Better yet, it’s small and comfortable on my wrist, you can re-use old Charge 3 bands, and the grayscale screen is bright enough to see just about anywhere (including a dark bedroom at 4 am).

The Charge 4 is a clever, compact motivational fitness tool with plenty to offer anyone looking for some basic tracking and support. If you won’t want a watch, it’s among the best fitness trackers you can buy. It offers a big range of insights and paints a digestible picture of your overall health and fitness. And the Active Zone Minutes concept is hugely addictive. It’s incredibly easy to use and syncs seamlessly with the well-presented app.

The Fitbit Charge 4 looks almost identical to its predecessor, including the grayscale touchscreen, but the addition of built-in GPS makes a huge difference, and helps make it a viable alternative to fully-fledged running watches if you enjoy working out for fun and health, but don't need a torrent of data on splits, cadence and elevation.

If you’re looking for a fitness tracker that’s small, lightweight, and comfortable but still has a decent amount of smarts, the Charge 4 isn’t just the best option, it’s really the only one. It’s $50 more than the Inspire HR, but the addition of an altimeter, Sp02 sensor, NFC, and GPS makes it well worth the extra money. The Charge 4 might not be flashy, but it’s a dependable tracker that does what it’s supported to do—keep you healthy.
