What You Need to Know

Formerly known as the 3G provider LIFE Mobile, Plusnet Mobile offers a small list of SIM-only bundles at some of the best rates available in the UK. Using EE’s network to deliver 3G and 4G service, they claim coverage for 99% of the population.

Plusnet Mobile offers pay monthly and pay-as-you-go (PAYG) service. Bundles range between £5 and £15 per month. If you’re an existing Plusnet broadband or home phone subscriber, you’ll enjoy double the data for the same low price.

As a SIM-only network, you’ll need to bring your own phone to establish service. However, support for 2G, 3G and 4G means that most devices are compatible. Their Multi-SIMs also make picking a SIM simple. Just adjust it to the size needed for your phone or tablet and pop it in!

What’s Good?

  • Low cost tariffs
  • 4G Access
  • Fast 4G speeds
  • Tethering allowed
  • Smart Cap prevents unwanted spending

What’s Bad?

  • No phone deals available
  • Data allowances lower than most without Mates Rates
  • Limited plan choices

Notable Features

  • Mates Rates: If you’re an existing Plusnet home phone or broadband subscriber, you’ll enjoy double the data on your monthly tariff at no extra charge.
  • Smart Cap: Automatically set at £10 when you establish service, the Smart Cap sets a limit to the out-of-tariff charges you can accrue each month. Instead of paying overages, you’ll find your usage limited until the next billing cycle.

Plusnet Mobile relies on the EE network to deliver service in the UK. According to the EE site, their 4G network now covers 75% of the UK landmass and 99% of the population. They plan to push landmass coverage to 99% by 2020.

You can check coverage and network types in your area at their support page.

In the 2016 “Speedtest Market Report UK”, EE ranked first for both upload and download speeds. Uploads averaged 12 Mbits per second while downloads averaged 33 Mbits per second.

OpenSignal's April 2017 "State of Mobile Networks: UK" report shows 3G download speeds of 6Mbits per second and 4G download speeds of 32Mbits per second.

These speeds are a slight improvement last year's data. OpenSignal’s 2016 “State of the Mobile Network UK” report showed average 4G download speeds of 28 Mbits per second and 3G download speeds of 6 Mbits per second.

Finally, Ofcom’s 2016 “Smartphone Cities” report shows overall download speeds across 8 of the UK’s major cities averaging 32 Mbits per second.

Do They Charge Roaming Fees?

Plusnet Mobile tariffs include calling and other features within the UK at no additional charge.

If you have a plan with the Roam Like at Home feature added, you'll also enjoy fee-free roaming in more than 40 European destinations. You'll even enjoy 4G data in many locations.

Limitations include:

  • Your plan must not be a "UK Only" plan
  • You must "mainly use your mobile in the UK"
  • Data is limited to 15GB while roaming even if your tariff includes more

Outside of the UK and EU, roaming fees will depend on the area in which you’re using your phone.

For more information, consult their Roam Like at Home page.

Roaming fees for various services include:

  • Making Calls: 4.4p to £3 per minute
  • Receiving Calls: 1p to £1 per minute
  • Texting: 1.8p to 50p each
  • Picture and Video Messages: 70p to £1.50 each
  • Data Usage: 4.4p to £3 per MB

For a complete list of rates by destination, consult Plusnet Mobile’s Roaming and International Calls page.

What About Long Distance Fees?

All Plusnet Mobile plans include calling to mobiles and landlines in the UK with your monthly minute balance.

For calls outside the UK, the long distance fee varies by destination, ranging from 50p to £2 per minute.

For a complete list of rates by destination, consult Plusnet Mobile’s Roaming and International Calls page.

Does Plusnet Offer Wi-Fi Calling?

No. Plusnet does not support native Wi-Fi calling or offer a Wi-Fi calling app.

How About Voice over LTE (VoLTE)?

No.

Can I Tether My Mobile?

Yes! Plusnet Mobile allows tethering on all tariffs using your existing data allowance. Any usage outside your allowance is subject to PAYG rates. For full details on activating tethering on your phone, consult their Mobile Price Guide.

NOTE: Tethering with a laptop or gaming console will often result in more data use than using your phone. If you have a tariff with a small data bucket, monitor your tethering usage to avoid unwanted surprises.

Can I Rollover Unused Data?

At the time of writing, Plusnet Mobile does not allow data rollover on their plans.

What Add-ons or Bundles are Available?

Plusnet Mobile offers a range of bolt-ons to help you keep costs manageable and create a tariff that meets your needs.

Options include:

  • Voice Minutes: Add 100 to 1000 minutes to your allotment for £1.50 to £12 per month
  • Text Messages: Add 100 to 1000 texts to your allotment for £1 to £6 per month
  • Data: Add 250MB to 4GB of data to your allotment for £2 to £15 per month
For a full list of options, consult their Bolt-Ons page.

Can I Bring My Own Mobile?

Yes! Plusnet Mobile is a SIM-only provider. You’ll need to bring an unlocked phone to use their service.

You’ll find a full list of pay monthly options on their SIM Only Deals page.

Do They Require a Credit Check?

All UK pay monthly plans require a credit check. PAYG bundles do not require a credit check if you already have a phone or pay for a new phone in full.

Requirements include:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age
  • You must have a UK credit or financial history

If you’re on the electoral roll at your address and have good credit, this can help to both speed up the credit check process and reduce the chance of needing to pay a large deposit.

To perform the check, Plusnet Mobile will likely ask for:

  • Your name, date of birth and marital status
  • Your current address and other addresses in the past 3 years
  • A credit/debit card or bank account registered to your current address

NOTE: Credit checks from networks that pull your credit bureau report may impact your credit score. If you're not sure the best options for your credit profile, we suggest contacting the network before attempting to obtain service.

Do They Charge an Early Termination Fee?

All of Plusnet Mobile’s current tariffs feature a rolling 30-day contract term.

However, in their Mobile Price Guide, they state:

“If your agreement includes a minimum term, you'll need to pay an in-contract cancellation charge (sometimes called early termination charges) if you or we end your agreement during this time. The in-contract cancellation charge will be your monthly plan price multiplied by the number of months left of your minimum term. You won't need to pay in-contract cancellation charges if you've got a rolling, monthly SIM-Only plan.”

Should you see an option for a longer contract in their plans, an early termination fee will likely apply.

Can I Port My Number To or From Plusnet Mobile?

All mobile networks in the UK must provide a PAC Code upon request. Giving this code to a new network will allow you to transfer your number.

To port your number to or from Plusnet Mobile, contact customer support and request your PAC code. They must deliver your PAC code within 2 hours of your request.

To receive your PAC code:

  • The account you are trying to transfer from must remain open.
  • You must be able to verify your identity through either personal documents or payment history.

Once you receive your code, contact Plusnet Mobile or your new network and give them the code. In most cases, your number will transfer within 1 to 2 business days. Be sure to complete this process quickly, as PAC codes expire 30 days from the date they are issued.

Will They Unlock My Mobile?

Plusnet Mobile does not sell mobile phones. If you should need your phone unlocked by your previous network, consult our network summaries for instructions and potential fees.
