Despite breaking smartphone megapixel records when it launched, the 64-megapixel Realme X2 Pro will only ever be a phone on the fringes of mainstream awareness, given the fact it’s availability is so limited. In the UK, you’ll have to buy one from a reseller, or pick it up directly from Realme online. If you’re okay with that fact though, with a starting price of €399, you’ll be hard-pressed to get more for your money. It’s build, display and specs are all top-tier, questioning the need for pricier device. While its camera isn’t perfect, it’s still a corker for the price, making the X2 Pro an affordable phone without an Achilles heel per se - if you can get your hands on one, that is.

Although it may sound cliché, Realme is trying to redefine the mid-range phone market with the X2 Pro, offering an unprecedented level of performance that will only be surpassed by much more expensive handsets. We especially like the variety of models and configurations to choose from, something which means you can get a 90Hz screen for under £400. For this and many other reasons which are outlined below, this phone is easy to recommend.

Talking about real-world usage, there are no complaints as such. Unsurprisingly, the X2 Pro is incredibly fast and continues to do what it is best at. The read/write speed is more rapid, with UFS 3.0 storage. In our experience, we experienced zero lag, zero hitches, and it’s just pure speed and raw power.

It offers a smooth 90Hz display and solid performance, thanks to Snapdragon 855+ SoC. The fast charging is a crazy feature, not something you will find on competition devices. You get a 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, an in-display fingerprint scanner and more.

Any way you look at it, the Realme X2 Pro is an absolute steal for the price. The phone excels in pretty much every department, from the camera to the gaming performance, from audio output to battery life, and everything in between. The only thing that can possibly drive you away from this phone is the software, which again is soon set to get much better with Realme’s own version of ColorOS 7 based on Android 10 lurking just around the corner.

The X2 Pro turned out to be quite impressive but was let down by its software. We are hoping that the upcoming customized Color OS 7 upgrade will finally eliminate this necessary evil out of the equation and make the X2 Pro a lot more attractive. The Realme X2 Pro is definitely a great buy for mobile gamers. But even if you don’t necessarily need the best possible gaming hardware, we can heartily recommend it as an option if you are restricted by a budget of around 30k.
