The Dinosaur That Just Won't Quit!

The Motorola MicroTAC 650e (Or known as the Motorola DPC 650)is a real workhorse that just won't die! I'll give you the pros and cons: Pros: None of the LED's are burnt out on the 11 year old display! It still has the original 1997 6 volt NI-CD battery that still gives me plenty of standby time. (I've had it turned on for 13 hours now and the battery graph shows 5/6 bars! (About 80% battery life left!) Being more powerful than one of todays phones in analog mode, it will get better reception. It's tough and rugged, I don't think it will ever wear out! The 4 color numeric LED display looks nice. The flip cover. (Of course!) The 2 speed-dial keys. And the automatic charging capability! Cons: Being an analog-only phone, and most of todays cellular systems being digital, it may not get good reception in some cases. For some reason, mine all of a sudden turns off on me, and then comes back on a few seconds later, all though it has only happened to me once or twice. Although it gets good standby and talk times for a phone of it's age, it could have been better. For some reason, it doesn't have voice note capabilities like StarTAC, realeased just a year prior to the MicroTAC 650e It doesn't have a dot-matrix alphanumeric display like most of the other members of the MicroTAC family. Overall, I recommend the MicroTAC 650e to anyone with good analog service, who needs a tough rugged phone unlike todays Motorola phones, but doesn't need a lot of features or battery life. Less

It's a refreshing to be reminder of how good these phone are. After not having use this phone for more than 4 years. I reactivated it for emergency purpose and was surprised that it still works like a cham and the sound quality was so much better then the new Nokia digital phone that I have. In analog mode, there simply is no match for this old workhorse. Short talking time is the only complain I ever had for this phone. Less

Is it operable?
