What the Critics Are Saying...

Notebookcheck

The decision for the Fairphone 3 will be a very conscious one. Its price is much higher than that of other similarly equipped competing smartphones, and its intended lifetime should substantially exceed two years. Otherwise, the replaceable modules might not make any difference whatsoever. And while...

The Fairphone 3 is a great all-round, affordable Android smartphone. Although, it's the company's ethical and environmental credentials that make this phone worth the investment.

It's hard to recommend to anyone who isn't a repairability nut. Performance is the biggest issue here — the Fairphone is already underpowered, and it will only get worse over the next few years. Coming versions of Android will probably require more power, so this mid-range SoC might not be very futu...

The decision for the Fairphone 3 will be a very conscious one. Its price is much higher than that of other similarly equipped competing smartphones, and its intended lifetime should substantially exceed two years. Otherwise, the replaceable modules might not make any difference whatsoever. And while the Fairphone 3 cannot keep up with the other manufacturers’ arms race it is definitely worthy of support if its hardware fits your bill.

On its own merits as a smartphone its objectively weaker than its similarly priced rivals, except in terms of repairability where it’s several magnitudes better. But that’s overlooking the Fairphone 3’s real USP which is fairness. Fairness in the supply chains it uses, the factories in which its built and for the future of the planet. These things have their own price and it turns out it roughly doubles the cost of a handset. The Fairphone 3 is very similar in specifications to the Moto G7 Power – a phone that could recently be had for £100, or roughly 25% of the Fairphone is asking for.

It's hard to recommend to anyone who isn't a repairability nut. Performance is the biggest issue here — the Fairphone is already underpowered, and it will only get worse over the next few years. Coming versions of Android will probably require more power, so this mid-range SoC might not be very future-proof regardless of how long the company pushes updates (it aims for five years). It's also comparatively pretty expensive, so you'd have to keep it for a long time to get your money's worth.

As with other phones with relatively low-cost components, of course, it does not have a camera module that any serious photographer or videographer would choose for its image quality. Nevertheless, the reality is that while it is not great for shooting video, the Fairphone can produce largely usable moving and still images under many common shooting conditions; and with the exception of underexposure, what flaws and faults there are simply aren’t noticeable on a small display. Near-chronic underexposure is a problem, though, as is its near-omnipresent pink cast.

The most ethical and repairable phone you can buy

The Fairphone 3 is a device full of compromises with one massive advantage: being ethical. If you were to look at the Fairphone 3 simply as a £420 smartphone, you’d say it costs about £200 too much and isn’t even a great £220 phone at that. You can buy a phone with more modern design, similar specifications, performance and software for around £220 such as the Motorola Moto G7, or phones that are infinitely better at £420. But the Fairphone 3 isn’t just another smartphone: it’s an entirely different way of thinking about how a phone and its creation fits into the world.

A normal smartphone with ethical shine

from TechCrunch

Purely as a smartphone, the Fairphone 3 offers very little to shout about — so no screaming lack either. Again, if the point is to shrink the size of the compromise Fairphone is asking consumers to make in order to buy an ethically superior brand of electronics they are slowly succeeding in closing the gap.

Modular, repairable, five years of support

from Android Authority

For Android fans, the Fairphone 3 is nothing like the shiny new device we usually see. It’s about a completely open and fixable modular phone, it’s about freedom to repair your own product, actual spare parts, and fair, ethically-sourced components. The specs are good enough, but definitely not great.
