GoPro was one of the first big names in action cameras. However, in the past year, competitors have taken the lead with innovative features and better pricing. The GoPro HERO5 Black hopes to reclaim their spot at the top of the rankings.

Reviewers across the Internet have been hitting the trails, catching waves and running laps putting the new action cam through its paces. Let’s see what they’re saying!

One of the first things mentioned in every review is the new GoPro design. There’s no more polycarbonate case. Yet it still retains waterproofing down to 10m. Reviewers loved both the reduction in size and improved audio offered by the shell-free design. TechRadar says, “We've not been in a situation where the camera has been tested to destruction, but our unit has been dropped, bumped and submerged in water many times, and the rear touchscreen remains unscratched, the casing is still intact, and the lens is in good condition.”

Should you need protection from flying debris or plan for some deep dives, the Super Suit accessory gets great reviews and makes the GoPro extra durable. You’ll also find a full range of mounts, adapters and lens filters.

The other new design element mentioned is the two-inch touchscreen. Reviewers found it responsive--even in damp conditions--and loved the menu arrangement. TechRadar noted, “The sheer weight of options can be baffling for those new to the action camera game, but it doesn't take much trial and error to get things right.”

Voice controls provide additional options when interacting with the camera isn’t possible. GoPro offers 13 commands for everything from turning the camera on to making a bookmark in the video for editing. The only things not covered are data transfers and connectivity toggles. CNet used the feature biking through the city and noted, “It works really well in general and I found myself using it when I didn't even have to.”

Many reviewers attributed part of the accuracy of the voice control system to the new microphone array in the GoPro HERO5 Black. Using multiple mics, the GoPro can now reduce wind noise. Alphr noted, “Audio is significantly improved, mainly due to the new wind-reduction feature and the fact that you no longer need to mount the camera in a case to ensure water tightness.”

Video capture options range from 4k at 30 FPS to 240 FPS super slow-motion at 720p. GoPro also added Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) to the new model—though many reviewers noted using it takes a toll on battery life. Bike Radar took their camera for a day of extreme mountain biking and declared, “[EIS has] been done incredibly well. You get a bit of a floaty feeling with the footage but nothing that ever dips into motion sickness territory."

Wi-Fi and GPS add to the options for capturing or transmitting data without having to break out a laptop.

One area where reviews suffered is battery life. The GoPro 5 series uses a new battery design—so your old batteries won’t work. A single charge only nets you about 1.5 hours of continuous shooting with typical options enabled. CNet breaks down what to expect well, saying, “Recording in 4K at 30fps, you'll get about an hour and a half of recording time. The same goes for capturing in 2.7K at 30fps with EIS, Wi-Fi and GPS on.” If you’re planning a day full of shooting, multiple batteries are a must.

Improvements weren’t limited to the hardware either. GoPro’s editing software now offers additional ways to present your footage. Quik uses themes to create automated videos with no editing knowledge. Splice offers a full-featured editing experience for advanced videos.

Overall, reviews for the GoPro HERO5 Black are stellar. They’ve packed more features and a sturdier design into the same price as the previous model. TechRadar summed up reviews well, saying, “The camera is simple to use, yet remains a very powerful tool, while the addition of a rear touchscreen, voice control and GPS make it one of the most feature-packed cams currently available.”

The best all-round action camera you can buy today

from TrustedReviews
By taking the best component pieces from older cameras and adding new features, the GoPro Hero 5 Black is the best camera GoPro has ever produced. It’s incredibly easy to use and the new form factor and waterproofing are fantastic additions. The electronic image stabilisation has been something I’ve been longing for for some time now, so it’s great to finally see it included, and it works really well. The image quality is best-in-class and there’s plenty to love for those taking photos alongside video... Full review

An awesomely powerful piece of kit, but not without its flaws

from TechRadar
Buttery-smooth 4K video comes as standard with the Hero5 Black, while a touchscreen interface and voice activation makes it the most user-friendly GoPro to date. However, it doesn't feel as robust without its plastic casing, and that touchscreen can be awkward to use... Full review

Forget the rest, this is the GoPro to get

The GoPro Hero5 Black is a true flagship camera with all the shooting options from its predecessor plus raw and wide dynamic range photo capture and linear field of view video, a touchscreen, a waterproof body, GPS, electronic image stabilization, stereo audio, voice control, the option for auto cloud uploads, and the best photo and video quality in a GoPro... An awesome action camera

The Hero 5 Black is an awesome little camera. Garmin has given GoPro some serious competition with the ViRB Ultra 30, but the Hero 5 Black excels in the fact that it’s waterproof without the need for a specific housing and with a stabilisation that feels more refined... Full review

The go-to action camera

The Hero 5 Black takes what the Hero 4 already did perfectly and adds a set of genuinely useful features which will be welcomed by most GoPro users. Where voice controls on a smartphone often feel like a gimmick, here they make perfect sense and work reliably... Full review

The best action camera in the business

from Alphr

It’s inevitable: with more features, better ease of use, and waterproofing, plus improved audio capture, the GoPro Hero 5 is the new king of action cameras. It’s also nice to see that, at a time when prices for consumer electronics are rising, that at £350 the Hero 5 is actually slightly cheaper than the Hero 4 Black was when it first launched. With the Hero 4 Black still going for a similar amount, it means recommending the Hero 5 Black a no-brainer. If you’re in the market for an action camera and you want the very best, pick the Hero 5. It’s the to... Full review

GoPro’s best action cam yet

The Hero 5 Black is the best action camera we’ve tested and the fact it’s cheaper than the outgoing Hero 4 Black sweetens the deal even further. With GPS, water resistance and video stabilisation, the Hero 5 is a fantastic upgrade from a Hero 4 Black... Full review

Problems solved

from Tom's Guide
The Hero5 Black continues GoPro's reputation for great quality in both photos and video. It now, finally, adds great usability with a clear touch-screen interface and pretty reliable voice control. The Garmin Virb Ultra 30 is an equally strong performer and a fine alternative. But GoPro also stands out for its slim, waterproof design and utterly thorough choice of add-ons... Full review

Takes all that's great about its predecessors and crams it into the best package yet

from Expert Reviews
It’s not quite perfect, but when the GoPro Hero 5 Black takes all the fancy features from its other models and crams it into a single device, it’s by far the most well-rounded action camera money can buy right now. It’s also a Brexit-beater, too. We’ve seen a lot of 2016 pieces of tech fall foul of price hikes thanks to Brexit, but GoPro hasn’t followed suit, with the Hero 5 Black costing £339 - £20 less than what last year’s model went for at launch...
