Nvidia's Shield TV is a feature-packed media streamer that's great for games, but Android TV is still lacking.

- Richard Easton, Expert Reviews

While the Nvidia Shield's 4K video and solid gaming chops make it the most potent Android TV device yet, app shortfalls and a relatively high price limit its appeal.

For me, the Shield TV could be the perfect gaming compromise for someone looking to cater to several 21st Century needs. Without needing to buy a separate console for games, a powerful PC, or a tablet, the right person will find most of what they need in one item. However, compromise does come into it as well, paying a big fee for a box that is hardly competitive against its app-heavy rivals will lead some to pause. Hopefully the Shield TV proves to be the start of something in gaming that will include more devices merging what an owner’s needs into one device, while also providing fresh alternatives for gamers to explore. It could indeed be the answer to some family homes where both casual games and top AAA titles can be found, the mix of popular Android and core gaming titles, will make it a top device to have in the living room.

A cord cutter’s dream

from GeekDad

There’s a reason I included the SHIELD TV in our Holiday Gift Guide. For under $200, the Nvidia SHIELD is an awesome cord-cutting smart TV box. With the added gaming features, cutting-edge 4K technology, and blazing speeds (compared to Apple TV, Fire TV, or Roku), the SHIELD TV is more than worth it and I highly recommend it.

Two parts gaming machine, one part set-top box

The Nvidia Shield is an awesome gaming system, but a mediocre set-top box. It's able to deliver stunning 4K content to your living room TV without breaking a sweat, but is ultimately limited by Android TV's lack of native apps and penchant for paid content.

Alphr

The best Android TV device you can buy

from Alphr

As an Android TV device, there isn’t anything better than the Shield TV. While that’s a bit of a backhanded compliment, due to Android TV’s own limitations, Nvidia’s saving grace is its focus on games and 4K.

For the price, you’re getting a rather adept Android games console, a 4K-ready TV streamer and the exciting prospect of on-demand gaming through GeForce Now. It’s also a device loaded with more power than it actually needs, which means it should remain powerful enough to deal with the latest Android titles for some time to come. Furthermore, the added bonus of being able to emulate older consoles so well – and at 1080p resolution – is tempting indeed...

Furthermore, the added bonus of being able to emulate older consoles so well – and at 1080p resolution – is tempting indeed.

The biggest problem for the Shield TV, however, will be finding an audience. Most avid gamers will already own a console or gaming PC, while those looking specifically for a streaming device will be better off with a Chromecast 2 or an Amazon Fire TV Stick. I seriously doubt there’s enough of a demographic sitting between these two camps for the Shield to be a success.

We’re extremely impressed by the Nvidia Shield both as a media streamer and as a games console. The beautiful UI and game-streaming technology is powered by one of the most impressive mobile processors on the market at the moment, and provides an experience akin to playing a PS4 or Xbox One. The native 4K resolution that supports 60fps playback is better than any other offering in the UK at the moment, with the Fire TV only being able to support 4K@30fps. GeForce Now has been coined as the ‘Netflix for gaming’ and although the library may be a bit sparse at the moment, the experience is great – being able to choose from a library and play it instantly is an intriguing experience and gives us a glimpse at the future of on-demand gaming.

The Nvidia Shield TV is a solid, although minimally flawed, game-centric entry into the world of Android TV set top boxes, and thankfully, it’s not underpowered like the Ouya. At £150, this Android TV may be worth the investment if you want 4K Netflix and a few more games than what the new Amazon Fire TV offers. We can’t help but feel that the PS4 is one price cut away from making it redundant though, even if it lacks 4K powers.

The Shield TV is undeniably the best-equipped media streamer out there, but Android TV is still a limiting factor. There are far cheaper alternatives out there that will happily get Netflix and more to your television, if that's all you're after. Even Chromecast support can’t get around the lack of services, as not all of the big name TV channels support casting. If you’re only after something to stream video and catch-up services, save your money and go for a Roku 3.

Powerful but pricey

The Shield lets you stream some games from the cloud, cast video from your phone and play 4K videos smoothly, but it costs more than $100 more than most competitors. Get it if you can afford it and really want to play Android games on your TV.

4K and gaming meet in powerhouse box

Number of Android TV-supported apps aside, the Nvidia Shield Android TV is the best media streamer out there bar none. There are devices that profess to offer more content and channels, such as those by Roku, but when it comes down to it there are only a handful of key services you will access on a daily basis.

The most powerful media streamer today

from T3

The Nvidia SHIELD is easily the most powerful, most versatile media streamer around and the best thing is that will only get better over time too. If you’ve been considering getting a new media streamer, the SHIELD is the one I’d recommend for the 4K future we’re all stumbling towards.
