While some aspects of the software are in dire need of upkeep, for now its app selection and simplicity are easy to recommend, especially if you’re not bound to the platforms of Apple, Amazon, or Google. But unless you’re looking to justify a 4K TV purchase, Roku’s flagship box isn’t for you. Go with the cheaper, smaller Roku 3 instead.

The 4K-ready Roku 4 leads the new pack of streaming boxes

from TechRadar

If you own a 4K TV, this is hands down the best video streaming system money can buy, offering more options than any one competitor. If you don't need Ultra-HD and still want some of the same amazing OS, consider stepping down to a Roku 2 or 3.

The Roku 4 is exactly what we'd expect from the company: a solid media box that plays well with multiple video services. But it's really only a worthwhile upgrade if you're going all-in with 4K. If you're happy with your current 1080p TV set and media box, then sit tight. You could argue that it's worth snapping up the Roku 4 to future-proof your setup, but by next year, newer standards like HDR will get ironed out and supported across all 4K devices and TV sets.

Future-proofed 4K version of the best streaming box

from Ars Technica

When your TV hardware and the content providers are all streaming 4K, you’ll be ready. And even if you don’t have a 4K TV yet, the Roku 4’s UI seems marginally crisper at 1080p than the Roku 3’s, and performance while you’re navigating through different streaming apps is improved, if not completely free of jankiness (that said, it’s hard to spot the differences if you’re actually streaming video). You get all the benefits of the Roku 3’s Enhanced Remote support with the promise of 4K support and software updates going forward.

You may be able to get a good amount of 4K content on the smart TV you already own, and in terms of gaming and extra features, the Fire TV and Shield TV have already left that TV in the dust.

That said, Roku as a whole is still the best-in-class streaming video box, due mostly to its volumes of programming, content-agnostic approach and ease-of-use. At least, it is until we can give our full assessment of the new Apple TV.

The Roku 4 costs twice as much for the privilege of 4K streaming, along with a few other niceties like the remote finder and an optical output. But none of those extras are worth it for most people. But let's say you just bought a 4K TV, you don't want to use its built-in apps and you don't mind paying extra to get the very slightly better quality afforded by 4K streaming. Or maybe you just want the best Roku yet. In that case, the Roku 4 is for you.
