Cheap Amazon-centric streamer a step behind competitors

from Cnet
The Amazon Fire TV Stick can access thousands of the most popular streaming apps. It's dirt cheap and unlike Chromecast, it actually includes a physical remote. Amazon content launches quickly. The voice remote option allows more convenient search and easy access to the Alexa digital assistant... Full review

For the Amazon faithful it offers easier access than the abortive web interface

from TechRadar
The new Amazon Fire TV is a pretty impressive little device. For your money you get an Ultra HD media player which also makes a decent fist of some light gaming. 4K playback is generally smooth, and the Amazon connection gives you access to the motherlode of paid-for UHD movie content... Excellent set-top box which is powerful and well designed

from PC Advisor

The Fire TV is an excellent set-top box which is powerful and well designed. The voice search works well too, but isn't available in all apps. There are other foibles, too, such as confusion over whether videos are included in your Prime Instant video subscription or not. Even so, the Fire TV is one of the best video streamers, but it really makes sense if you pair it with a Prime Instant Video subscription and use Amazon's other services. 4K content is still limited, and many 4K TVs already have the Prime Instant Video app. This means it's going to appeal to people who want 4K Prime Instan... Excellent user interface, powerful search and recommendations tools

from Recombu
Our final verdict will take into consideration how the new Fire TV stacks up against this as both a gaming system and a media device. Given that the Shield lets you stream full PC games compared to the Android-bases titles, we’re already pretty certain how that particular battle’s going to turn out. If you’ve already got a Fire TV device and you’re firmly plugged into the Amazon ecosystem, we’d recommend shelling out for this; it’s more of what you’ve already got, plus almost all of the 4K providers in one place... Worth it if you have a 4K TV and are an Amazon Prime subscriber

from SlashGear
If you have a 4K TV and are an Amazon Prime subscriber, the 2015 edition of the Fire TV is worth the $100 you'll spend. If, however, you're looking for an OK video streaming device for as cheap as possible, you might want to hunt down last year's model. If you want to use this device as a VLC-machine, just plugging in a USB stick with all of your favorite video files and playing them through an app, then the Fire TV is a good deal. Though the last model could do the same thing - so again, you might want to just find last year's model... Full review

Streaming movies in 4K Ultra HD has never been faster

from Sunday Express

The Amazon Fire TV is lightning fast – both in terms of navigating around its freshly redesigned user interface and streaming your favourite on-demand content, whether it’s from the BBC, Channel Four, Netflix or Amazon itself. The remote control's voice search is incredibly accurate, but is currently only really useful for those who’ve previously bought stacks of digital Amazon content, or opted for the US firm's £79 annual Prime subscription service. If you’re heavily-invested in Amazon services or Ultra HD 4K streaming, the Amazon Fire TV is a great choice. B... Full review

Hardware Secrets

Very well-made piece of equipment

from Hardware Secrets

The new Amazon Fire TV is a very well-made piece of equipment. It is especially useful if you have already bought into the Amazon echo system by subscribing to Amazon Prime and/or storing photos and music on Amazon’s servers. This new Fire TV is incrementally better including better voice search and faster processing. It is also a good choice if you are a casual gamer. Amazon has promised to add Alexa to older Fire TVs in the near future. So if you own last year’s model, there is little reason to upgrade to this version unless you have a 4K TV, really crave a faster respons... Full review

Android Central

Inexpensive yet powerful set-top box

from Android Central

It's another home run from Amazon with the Fire TV. When the retail giant is producing products of this caliber its hard to believe it got it so very wrong with a smartphone. If you want an inexpensive yet powerful set-top box, this has to be up at the top of the list. It's smooth, speedy experience while providing a sleek, if uninspiring physical form that will blend seamlessly into any entertainment center. It's also clear Amazon is thinking about the product. Optical audio out is OK, and some folks will lament its loss. But for the majority the lack of internal storage is a bigger deal.... Full review

The Guardian

Simple, fast, 4K and the best TV streaming

from The Guardian
The Amazon Fire TV has a powerful combination of user-friendly features, excellent streaming service support and relatively low cost. It’s one of the easiest to setup and use, and the starting explainer video is excellent. It really only makes sense if you subscribe to Amazon’s Prime service costing £79 a year or buy video content through Amazon’s digital store, but with access to Netflix, UK catchup services and a solid collection of apps and games it makes for a compelling mix... T3

The best-value 4K streaming box

from T3
In the end then the new Fire TV is an improvement over the old box, in that it can do a rudimentary 4K job, but it’s only really going to be of interest to the Amazon Prime faithful or the serial movie buyer/renter. Everyone else is going to be better served by either the SHIELD - if you’ve got the hots for Ultra HD - or the new Apple TV if not... Full review
