What's bad

  • Grainy low-light pictures

GoPro might be synonymous with the extreme sports crowd, but the company hopes to expand its market to the professional field with their flagship camera the Hero4 Black. Design-wise, it sports the now iconic boxy look and measures a mere 2.8 x 2.6 x 1.5 inches with the included case. Not only does the case provide the much needed mount, it also makes it also is waterproofed to SCUBA-grade depth of 131 feet. As an added bonus, experts found it added increased ruggedness against shocks and falls.

The biggest draw of the Hero4 Black is its faster processor, which allows it shoot 4K videos at 30 frames per second (FPS). While the Silver edition shoots 4K as well, it is only at 15 FPS, something even GoPro doesn't promote using. When shooting at 1080, the Black offers a whopping 120 FPS rate. Whether they used 4K or 1080p, experts consider it to be the best action camera on the market. Although they found the contrast and saturation were a bit flat they add this led to increased detail and more accurate colors. They noticed unsurprisingly that as their resolutions decreased so too did the video quality. Interestingly, they found the 480p videos to be fairly crisp considering the limited resolution.

Besides video, the Hero4 Black can also take pictures with their time lapse option. Critics were able to take relatively crisp and detailed photos in bright light. Things took a turn for the worse in low light as most of their pictures turned out grainy though PC Mag describes the images as "still very useable."

The biggest drawback for them, however, was the lack of image stabilization. Although they didn't mind it when taking more action-centric videos, it was a bit too shaky for normal use. Still, they add the wide field of view does minimize it a bit.

The ability to shoot 4K video comes with a price and that's battery life. When put to the test, it lasted experts a little over an hour on 4K with Wi-Fi disabled. At lower resolutions they were able to eke out around two hours. While the life might not be great, the battery is removable so it's possible to extend use by carrying around some extras.

While it might have some shortcomings, overall reviewers consider the GoPro Hero4 Black to be the best action camera on the market for those who need 4K video. Toms Guide states, "The GoPro Hero4 Black offers top-notch performance. And it's worth the price…if you're looking for the best there is…" Digital Trends adds, "… …if you're looking to future proof all your all of your content, the Black is a no brainer."

Packed with shooting options and provides great image quality

from TrustedReviews

The Hero 4 Black just about keeps GoPro at the top of the pack. Most importantly, image quality is excellent for an action camera. The range of shooting resolutions available is bewildering, with only high-speed 4K missing, and that would be a lot to expect from a tiny action camera – although I'm sure it will be coming soon, with 8K rumoured for the Hero 5. This is an expensive option, considering that the mounting bundle included is really just enough to get you started, and the LCD is an optional extra, where competitors half the price such as ISAW give you more for half the p... 4K capture, slow motion HD capability, rugged design

from PC Magazine

The Hero4 Black is the best camera that GoPro makes, and the best action cam that we've tested—and it's priced accordingly. It maintains the small, go-anywhere design that make GoPros the favorite of adventurers and indie filmmakers alike, while adding 4K video capture that's smooth at 30fps and trounces 1080p video in terms of resolution. And GoPro is a popular brand, so mounts and accessories are plentiful. The Hero4 Black isn't perfect—battery life is certainly a concern, so you'll likely want to keep a few spare batteries ready and charged for extended use—and I wish t... Full review

Fantastic image quality and improves on the tested GoPro formula

As a complete package, the Hero4 Black is an excellent action camera for those who need something top of the line, but it just falls just short of a Best Buy award due to its battery life and lack of image stabilisation... Full review

Great 4K for a Price

The GoPro Hero4 Black offers top-notch performance. And it's worth the price under certain conditions: If you want to shoot 4K video or are an image aficionado who would like to make extensive edits to photos or videos... Full review

Shooting with GoPro’s Hero4 Black will make you feel like a pro filmmaker

from Digital Trends
All in all, we would still highly recommend the Hero4 Black for consumers. Even if you’re not a pro-level shooter, or adept at color grading, the ability to capture motion in glorious 4K is a worthy investment since your footage will eventually live online from here out. It’s always better to downscale footage now than upscale it in the future... Full review

Most advanced GoPro ever

The GoPro Hero4 Black is as much a professional filmmaking tool as something you can just strap to your helmet to capture some action. A comprehensive array of new manual settings, plus dazzlingly detailed 4K at 30fps and silky slo-mo 1080p at 120fps make it a truly professional tool... Full review

The best action cam gets upgraded

from NDTV
There is no doubt that the GoPro Hero4 Black is the best action camera money can buy right now, thanks to its superior 4K 30fps video recording capabilities, great performance, and compact yet sturdy body. That said, the battery life is a big letdown, and combined with the heating issues, this essentially means that the GoPro Hero4 Black is more suited for 1080p video capture... Full review

Expensive, great-value action cam for those that need the best image quality

from Tech Advisor
The Hero4 Black is a fantastic action camera that shoots great quality footage. It's expensive, but you get a lot for your money. Other 4K cameras are available, but none are as small, rugged or cheap as the GoPro. This makes it ideal for capturing extreme sports, using attached to a drone such as the DJI Phantom, or strapping to your roll bar (as we did) and recording a spirited drive down the back lanes... Excellent video footage, higher frame rates, improved menu system

from Wareable
The quality of the video footage and photos created by the GoPro Hero4 Black is hugely impressive considering the small size of the package (which means you can take it or strap it or mount it anywhere). For most people, though, the cheaper price, integrated screen and simpler mode selection of the Silver model is going to carry the most appeal... Full review
