What's good

  • Crisp and smooth video capture
  • Priced for budget-minded consumers
  • Good image quality for pictures in good light

What's bad

  • Non-removable waterproof case
  • Non-removable battery
  • Video grainy in low lighting

The GoPro Hero+ is a step up from the more basic GoPro Hero but still priced for the budget-minded adventure seekers. It doesn't vary too much in terms of design from the rest of the lineup. It has a lens, a front LCD and three buttons. As it is meant to be used on the go, it is quite small at 2.8 x 2.7 x 1.2 inches and weighs a scant 119 grams. While it can connect to variety of accessory mounting tools, it does not have a tripod screw.

Like the Hero+ LCD, the Hero+ comes with a non-removable waterproof case. While some experts appreciated the constant waterproofing, it did have some downsides. First, it meant that they could not remove the batteries. Speaking of batteries, they were able to get around two hours out of it when recording at the highest setting with Wi-Fi disabled. Second, it reduced its versatility as they were not able to use some of the accessories like a stabilization gimbal.

While it cannot capture 4K video, it is able to shoot up to 1080p at 60 frames per second (FPS) though the camera is capable of lower FPS and resolution. In general, experts recorded at 60 FPS as they were able to capture fast-moving action with excellent clarity. In good lighting, their videos were smooth with excellent color reproduction. It only became grainy once they moved to lower light situations, but they add the detail was still strong. Like others in the GoPro lineup, the Hero+ does not come with optical image stabilization, but its exclusion wasn't a huge loss for critics. As they state, the camera is more for the extreme sports crowd who want to capture all of the jolts and bumps.

Besides video capture, the Hero+ can also take pictures. Experts compare image quality to a good smartphone. Their images were crisp and clear though indoors it became far grainier and suffered detail loss.

While it isn't without its faults, experts recommend the GoPro Hero+ for those looking for an action camera at a lower price. PC Mag states, "The Hero+ captures crisp footage with an ultra-wide perspective…If you are looking to spend less…this is a solid choice."

Solid action camera if you're on a budget

from PC Magazine

The GoPro Hero+ is an appealing choice for action cam shoppers who don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a camera (though there's no guarantee that you won't break a bone using one). If you want more resolution, you'll need to spend more for a 4K model, like the Hero4 Black or the Sony X1000V, both priced around $500. The Hero+ captures crisp footage with an ultra-wide perspective, includes a couple of mounts to get you started, and is compatible with a wealth of additional mounting accessories both from GoPro and from third parties. It's not perfect—two hours of recording time isn'... Full review
