What's good

  • Excellent noise isolation
  • Natural sounding audio quality
  • Classy design

What's bad

  • Uncomfortable to wear for long amounts of time
  • Somewhat flat sound dynamics

Despite a rocky start upon initial release of the Spirit One, Focal was able to rectify the situation and produce a pair of premium headphones. The headphones are made from highly polished plastic with aluminum hinges for improved durability. Rather than the standard one hinge, the Spirit One has two vertical hinges that attach to the faux leather ear cups and one horizontal axis, which allows users to adjust the tightness of the headphones to suit their head shape and size. According to reviewers, this has the added benefit of improving passive noise isolation though the additional pressure also makes it uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Experts paint the Spirit One's soundscape as having a fairly punchy bass and well realized mid and high range. They note that in general the headphones are natural sounding if not a little on the neutral side. What Hi Fi adds, "The only noteworthy drawback is a slight, but palpable, lack of excitement…the Spirit One never really take flight, and this…is coupled with a slight lack of dynamic thrust." In addition to music listening, it also comes with controls for smartphones so you can make and receive calls.

All in all, critics highly recommend the Focal Spirit One. CNET says, "The Spirit One not only scores with superb sound quality, but it's reasonably comfortable with first-rate construction quality and classy style." Pocket Lint adds, "The noise isolation is super, the sound is great and they really look great."

The only noteworthy drawback is a slight, but palpable, lack of excitement.

For all their powers of resolution, the Spirit Ones never really take flight, and this reticence is coupled with a slight lack of dynamic thrust.

But there’s no doubt these are a viable alternative to the likes of B&W’s P5s.

Put together nicely and delivers terrific sound

We really like the Focal Spirit headphones, they have a sound that is very appealing. If we had to be concise, we'd say they sound "just right". There's no time when we felt one bit of the sound had too much of any one component, or not enough of any part of the frequency range.

We really like the Focal Spirit headphones, they have a sound that is very appealing. If we had to be concise, we'd say they sound "just right". There's no time when we felt one bit of the sound had too much of any one component, or not enough of any part of the frequency range.

In terms of comfort, they lose a tiny bit because they aren't all that easy to adjust, clamp quite hard and have cups that are fractionally too small for our ears. None of these things is a major issue, but it might make listening for extended periods a bit more bothersome.

he noise isolation is super, the sound is great and they really look great - although we'd buy in black. The only issue is that they're not as comfortable as some to wear, but if you're out and about, you'll be pleased to have them clamp your head.

For the adventurous type, this offers a standout design on top of superb sound

The Focal Spirit Ones certainly look the part if you want your headphones to make as much of a visual impact as an aural one. They’re not the most comfortable closed-back, circumaural headphones on the market, but I couldn’t really describe them as uncomfortable either. There’s... More

The Focal Spirit Ones certainly look the part if you want your headphones to make as much of a visual impact as an aural one. They’re not the most comfortable closed-back, circumaural headphones on the market, but I couldn’t really describe them as uncomfortable either. There’s a decent bundle in the box too.

When it comes to sound quality, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The sound is a little narrow for my taste, and the overall quality is very much dependant on the genre of music you favour. As always, sound quality is very subjective, but with a price tag of £199, I expected the Spirit Ones to be a little more versatile.

The Focal Spirit One are the world's best portable headphones.

The Focal Spirit One are very smooth and natural sounding, in fact, they are the most neutral closed-back phones I've heard.

The Focal Spirit One are very accurate, but as a closed headphone not necessarily that transparent. If you're trying to recreate the sound of the concert hall, it's as if there's a very thin layer of paper between you and the live sound.

The sound is pleasant and ungrating, but not as immediate as Stax. It is very pleasant, but you're not there. It's never harsh; everything is always listenable.

These are great for enjoying music since they make everything sound good, but bad for monitoring or mixing because they tend to hide defects and will lead you to make recordings with too much presence and too little bass.

No surprises here, Focal knows the sound that audiophiles want, and it delivers the goods. The Spirit One not only scores with superb sound quality, but it's reasonably comfortable with first-rate construction quality and a classy style.
