What's good

  • Clear, dynamic sound profile
  • Collapsible design
  • Two audio jacks for shared music listening

What's bad

  • Might be too large for petite heads
  • Noticeable ear fatigue after long term listening

The V-Moda Crossfade M-100 is unique in that it was crowdsourced using feedback from DJs, producers and the company's online community. This direct interaction with their target market shaped the sound and features available on these headphones.

The most notable addition is its ability to collapse the ear cups inside the headband for storage, made possible by patented solution called CliqFold Hinge. Experts mention that the new design allows for better portability though also mention that it is very easy to get your fingers trapped in the folding mechanism. It also now comes with two audio jacks, which allows users to attach their cable to either side and share music via another pair of headphones.

Design-wise, the M-100 features the diamond shaped ear cup plates, a steel frame and plastic ear cups. Reviewers were impressed with its overall durability noting that it was made to handle 6 foot drops and rough handling. In terms of comfort, while this model is lighter than its direct competitor, the Beats Studio, experts found it much more uncomfortable as the ear cups tend to graze against the ears, causing ear fatigue. What Hi Fi also mentions that, "While they grip your head confidently, those with petite head size may find them a bit too large…"

As with all headphones, sound quality is the number one consideration and experts are happy to find that the M-100 delivers on that front. As with its predecessors, it offers a bass heavy experience; however critics describe the actual sound quality as clean and detailed when comparing to previous iterations. Trusted Reviews states, "Even at high volumes, the bass is powerful but there's no sign of rattling or distortion." Besides listening to music, it also comes with a mic for answering phone calls.

In general, reviewers recommend the M-100 to users who want a little more bass in their listening experience. About.com audio expert says, "If you're a bass lover who also likes clear, dynamic sound profile that's warm and not muddy, you can't go wrong…" Gizmag adds, "Overall…these are a very capable pair of performance headphones."

They’re clearly meant to be flaunted in public, so it’s a good thing the M-100s fit the bill for portable use with their compact, snug frame.

A collapsible design makes them easy to lug around – just be careful you don’t get your finger trapped in the folding mechanism.

The V-Modas hit all notes a little harder than is necessary.

This ballsy approach just about works with heavy metal, but doesn’t bode well for classical or vocal-led songs that need a gentler touch.

Detail and refinement are needed to truly compete with class rivals. Determined to make an impact, these style-conscious cans are made to be seen more than heard.

About

Looks good and sounds even better

from About

The M-100 especially shines when used with genres such as hip hop, dance and electronic. In terms of fit, the ear padding is nice and soft and helps minimize leakage while adding a little bit of passive noise reduction.

As far as downsides, the biggest one would be cost. With a suggested retail price of $310, the M-100 certainly doesn’t come cheap and is right smack within the higher end of consumer headphones....

For folks who prefer a DJ-style headphone or a healthy amount of low end with their music, however, the M-100 is just what the doctor ordered. If you’re a bass lover who also likes a clear, dynamic sound profile that’s warm and not muddy, you can’t go wrong with the V-Moda Crossfade M-100.

Has a unique manner of catching your attention

At £270, the M-100s are not cheap and sit in the same price bracket as the Logitech UE 9000 and the Denon AH-D600. When you put them on and plug in your music, it doesn’t take very long to realise the M100s are worth the money.

The V Moda Crossfade M-100 headphones are a massive step in the right direction for V-Moda. They sound amazing and have the kind of understated good looks that make them different from anything else out there. It’s the little extras that help make the M-100s some of the best over ear headphones to buy....

The Gadgeteer

A crowd-sourced wonder that still retains a bit of originality

from The Gadgeteer

The Crossfade M-100 is a crowd-sourced headphone. Crowd-sourced simply means that different people (mostly audiophiles) had a direct hand in how the M-100’s sound was developed.

Even though the M-100 is the culmination of many opinions, V-MODA still managed to keep what was unique about their previous headphones and improve on the rest....

Even though the M-100 is the culmination of many opinions, V-MODA still managed to keep what was unique about their previous headphones and improve on the rest.

The V-MODA M-100 is a rare audiophile, yet truly mobile, headphone. Its small-when-folded footprint, ease of use and tough construction put it in a class of one. At slightly over $300, the M-100 is not an impulse buy and is probably a bit much for daily commuting use. But for the frequent traveler who demands the best in sound with portability or even that desk-bound office worker, there may not be a better choice.

Gizmag

Simply the best pair of V-Moda headphones available for the money

from Gizmag

The Crossfade M-100s were developed in collaboration with over 200 audiophiles, editors, artists, DJs and Grammy-winning musicians ... and it shows.

Unlike some other audiophile-pleasing headphones I could mention, the Crossfade M-100 over-the-ear (circumaural) cans won't make you look like you're trying out for the role of Princess Leia in a Star Wars remake. That said, to be honest, the overall styling is perhaps a little more high fashion than I would normally accommodate, but it's the performance that really matters....

Overall, these are a very capable pair of performance headphones. The soundstage is huge, the detail and clarity stunning, and the rich Modern Audiophile signature impressive.

Has a little bit of something for everyone

from Digital Trends

V-Moda’s flagship headset, the M-100, has been making waves for more than just good looks. Offered at $300, the headset has garnished praise around the industry for its sound as well as its style.

Though the M-100 are solidly constructed, the headphones are relatively light on the head. We found the slim pad on the headband more than ample for extended listening, while the over-ear pads clamp firmly to the head without overbearing pressure, providing a very comfortable fit....

Though $300 is on the high side for a consumer headset, the V-Moda M-100 deliver the rich blend of power, detail, and dimension that we have come to expect from a headphone in its price range. What’s more, the M-100’s handsome, portable design make them not only convenient, but a real joy to take along for the ride. If you’re the kind of person who likes to keep elite sound in tow wherever you go, the M-100 are an outstanding choice; and if you aren’t, a little time spent with the M-100 might just change your mind.

You can plug your cord into the bottom of your rightphone and on the left you've got a real-deal V-CORK to seal the deal. These phones work with frequency response between 5 and 30 kHz and have a sensitivity of 103 dB @ 1kHz 1mW. The Crossfade M-100s are the highest quality headphones V-MODA has ever offered, audio and all.

In the end, it's all about refinement. V-MODA's Crossfade M-100 headphones are the finest combination of sound quality, tactile quality, and comfort I've experienced at this price range in a pair of headphones

Cnet

A beautifully built headphone that sounds even better

from Cnet

The M-100 has an engaging, lively sound that lets you hear lots of detail, but never sounds harsh or too bright.

The bass, always a V-Moda strength, is punchy and deep so it's the sort of headphone that brings out the best in rock, or any bass-heavy music, but not at the cost of rendering classical or acoustic jazz less appealing to the ear. If you're a versatile audiophile or a DJ that needs a rugged headphone that doesn't compromise on fidelity, the V-Moda Crossfade M-100 is a worthwhile purchase....

It's clear that the Crossfade M-100 is V-Moda's best headphone. It's beautifully built and sounds great with all types of music. Its exceptional build quality and durability, compared with most audiophile-oriented designs and various Beats by Dr. Dre models bode well for the M-100's long-term use.

Sure, it's a highly competitive market, but no other headphone can touch the M-100's combination of features, build quality, and sound for the money.

Laptop Magazine

Ends up being noticeably superior when compared with others

from Laptop Magazine

The V-Moda M-100 headphones are very reminiscent of its predecessor, the V-Moda Crossfade LP. The ear cushions are about the same size, and fit comfortably over our ears, making all-day wear possible.

The M-100s also have a dual-input feature so that you can plug in two different music sources and listen to them at the same time. For all the other times when you only have one source plugged in, the headphones come with V-cork seals so that the air level stays balanced on both sides...

It's been a while, but the new $300 Crossfade M-100s were well worth the wait. V-Moda's attention to detail results in ultimate comfort, minimal sound leakage, deep but clear bass, crisp midrange and excellent range for a fair but premium price.
