What's good

  • Slim design and lightweight for easy portability
  • Great industrial design
  • Satisfactory sound for its size

What's bad

  • Mid-range distortion at high volumes
  • Not great for outdoors use
  • Susceptible to damage

Jawbone made waves with the introduction of their original Jambox and since then has released a more portable version with the MINI JAMBOX. Measuring in at a diminutive 58 x 154 x 24.5mm (2.3 x 6.1 x 0.9 inches) and weighing only 255 grams, it is half the width of its predecessor and one of the smallest mini Bluetooth speakers available. Despite its small size, experts still found it a bit difficult to fit in their pockets comfortably. Engadget states, "Yes, it's a much smaller speaker, but unless you're wearing cargo pants, you'll want to toss it in your bag."

Cast from a single piece of anodized aluminum, the MINI comes in nine different colors and five different grill patterns. Buttons are fairly sparse with only a volume, play/pause and power and pairing on top of the device. You can pair up to 8 devices with two of them connected simultaneously. For those without Bluetooth enabled devices, it comes equipped with a 3.5mm audio input. Critics were quite happy with the overall look and feel of the device though were a bit disappointed that they could not angle the speakers at all and by its susceptibility to damage.

For a small speaker, most reviewers concede that the MINI delivers a satisfactory sound experience. While they note that it can't deliver wall shaking bass, they were generally happy with the low-end range. Unfortunately, some mid-range distortion was noticed at higher volumes with Trusted Reviews noting, "…it's ugly enough to make you need to turn the volume down to the 80 per cent mark." Top volume in general was not impressive. Aside from the distortion, most reviewers warn that this is neither a room-filling speaker nor great for outdoors use.

Recommendations were fairly divided for Jawbone's MINI. CNET commends the device saying, "…while the Mini Jambox may not sound superb, it's the best-sounding micro Bluetooth speaker I've encountered." PCMag on the other hand states, "If you want the best portable Bluetooth speaker we've tested...deal with the extra heft for the Bose SoundLink Mini.”

Great budget Bluetooth speaker

from Tom's Guide
If sound and style matter to you, the Mini Jambox is the ultraportable Bluetooth speaker for you. With plenty of colors and patterns to choose from, you can find one that matches your style. Beyond that, you’ll get good battery life and a useful speakerphone. If you need a louder portable speaker, the UE Mini Boom may be the better option, but the balanced sound and bass of the Mini Jambox really make it stand out from the rest... Full review

It does what it is supposed to do and looks good while doing it

from UnleashThePhones
The Mini Jambox is undoubtedly my favourite accessory of 2013. Even though its price is on the steep side, it surpasses my expectations of a Bluetooth speaker and is a thoughtfully-designed product that does what it is supposed to do and looks good while doing it, while comparing very favourably to its competitors in key areas like battery life. Definitely recommended... Full review

Covers everything you might expect out of a Bluetooth speaker

from T3
It's another tour de force from Jawbone. Did you really think it would be anything less? You could argue that it should be a little cheaper, but the bonus features, the classy design and the incredibly convenient size and battery life easily make it all worthwhile once paired with the ludicrously good audio quality that we've come to expect from speakers from this company... Stylish design can't make up for unimpressive sound quality

from Expert Reviews
Although the Jambox Mini looks fantastic, is small enough to fit in a coat pocket and has some interesting extra features, its sound quality doesn't match up to that of its rivals. It's also an expensive speaker, so you're definitely paying a premium for the Jambox's design... Full review

Decent sound and long battery life in a compact design

from TechRadar

It's a very solid little speaker. Build quality is fantastic, and the anodized aluminium is beautiful to look at. Combine that with solid acoustics - especially for such a small speaker - and simple connectivity and this is a very solid option for anyone looking to get more from their mobile audio.

The music control aspect of the Jawbone app, which offers control for the different functions of the speaker, doesn't seem to offer anything better than the different apps it tries to replace. But it does look nice, so there's that.

It's not the cheapest portable Bluetooth speaker... Full review

Great sound, even smaller size

from TechHive

The Mini Jambox is a delightful little speaker. It sounds bright, clear, and punchy. While it’s not the speaker for a rollicking multiroom party, it works great around the house, as the soundtrack for a small gathering, for personal listening, and for allowing everyone crowded around an iPad to hear the latest viral video they’re watching.

Should you buy the Mini Jambox? That depends. If you already own a regular Jambox, you don’t need this one. If you want true room-filling sound, the Big Jambox is the best Jambox. And plenty of great compact Bluetooth speakers ar... Full review

Great looks but sound quality is lacking

from PC Magazine
Jawbone's Mini Jambox is an impressively small, stylish speaker, but it isn't very loud for its size, offers little to no bass, and pales in comparison to the now-$150 full-size Jambox... Full review
Mashable

Skinny speaker, hefty sound

from Mashable
Jawbone has leveled-up the category by going back to basics: Put as much sound as possible in the smallest form factor possible. Good sound on the go has never been more pocketable. The Mini Jambox's small footprint belies its powerful, clean sound, and the aluminum enclosure gives it a solid, high-end feel... Full review

Performs well for something so small

from TrustedReviews
If you want a small portable speaker to play at relatively low volumes around the house, the Mini Jambox is a solid – if slightly expensive – choice. However, if you're willing to go for a slightly larger box, you can get more powerful sound for less money... Full review

Captivating looks but disappointing sound and build quality

from iLounge

Nearly three years after the original Jambox debuted, Jawbone’s Mini Jambox is entering a changed market—one where similarly-sized and sonically superior options are now commonly available at lower prices. It would be very easy to describe Mini Jambox as an $80-caliber speaker in a $130-caliber enclosure sold for $180, but that doesn’t do full justice to what Jawbone is offering here. Mini Jambox is a compact, visually striking speaker designed to appeal to people with big pocketbooks and relatively little interest in optimizing the audio quality they receive for the dolla...
