Remember the news item we reported sometime last week regarding the first 8-megapixel phone to be released in the US? Well, it seems that both AT&T and T-Mobile will have one as part of their line-up in 2009.

There’s already confirmation of the Pixon with AT&T 3G, and now, the FCC has also approved a similar 8-megapixel camera phone with the codename Memoir. It’s real model name is actually the SGH-T929 which is basically one and the same as the Pixon. Previous reports revealed that T-Mobile will launch it as the Leica, but now it seems that it will carry the Memoir name. Unlike the Pixon of AT&T, the Memoir comes with 1700MHz HSDPA connectivity. The touchscreen display, 8-megapixel camera with autofocus, Bluetooth 2.0, and A-GPS are still there, but other features are yet to be known.

So it’s now confirmed that two carriers will be releasing almost identical 8-megapixel phones in the US. The question now is; who will be the one to release theirs first? Rumor is that T-Mobile will have the Memoir ready by February 2009. No word yet from AT&T, but with this latest development, we won’t be surprised by a sudden announcement.
