Do you take the TTC streetcar to get to work? Do you often find yourself late when the streetcar passes by your place? If so, this SMS service launched by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) might be of great help to you.
By simply sending a text message to 898882, you can get either the scheduled time of arrival of the next 6 vehicles for all routes, arrival times for a specific route, or the arrival time for a specific route headed towards a particular direction. Over 600 streetcar stops have already been affixed with a unique 5-digit Stop Number which you need when sending an SMS message to the TTC.
Below is how to go about it as posted on the TTC website:
1. For up to the next 6 vehicle arrival times for all routes serving your stop, text:
5-digit Stop Number to the 6-digit Short Code 898882 (TXTTTC)
2. For arrival times for one specific route servicing your stop, text:
5-digit Stop Number followed by a space and the specific route number to the 6-digit Short Code 898882 (TXTTTC)
3. For arrival times for a specific route servicing your stop in a particular direction, text:
5-digit Stop Number, followed by a space, followed by a specific route number, followed by a space, and then followed by a specific direction (N, S, E or W) to the 6-digit Short Code 898882 (TXTTTC)
4. For other information or help, text:
HELP to the 6-digit Short Code 898882 (TXTTTC)
This is another example of how mobile technology is playing a simple yet vital role in making things more convenient for the general public. Do note though that standard text messaging rates still apply here. For the complete press release, you can read the announcement here.
