What Hi-Fi

Accomplished, grown-up headphones – with an odd USP

A unique selling point is sometimes ‘unique’ for a reason – so you’ll need to look beyond the daft visual control system here to see that the Lagoon ANCs have plenty to recommend them. They’re not the last word in excitement, but if you value a judicious and thoughtful presentation, they could be just the ticket.

There’s no question that the Sony is the undisputed king of the ANC space right now and in that regard, the Lagoon doesn’t top it. The finer details in the lower end are also brought forward better by the Sony, however when it comes to comfort and more importantly musicality, you might want to give the Beyerdynamic Lagoon a listen. They come with a cool 45 hours of battery life if you don’t use ANC and the number drops down to 24 if you use the tech.

Bluetooth over-ear headphones with noise cancelling

With a price of 400 Euro, the Lagoon ANC is in the same class as models from Sony, Bose and Sennheiser. For the noise reduction I would prefer Sony’s WH-1000XM3 or the Bose NC700 because of its variable adjustability. But Beyerdynamic can’t be matched in terms of wearing comfort and general sound quality. Indeed, with the high sound quality of the drivers in passive operation, the Heilbronn-based manufacturer continues to show how to lay a good foundation.

StereoNET

One of the best active noise-cancelling headphones on the market

from StereoNET

It might feel like a high asking price, but the sound quality alone is worth it. Combine that with some incredible isolation, excellent noise cancelling ability and downright ridiculous battery life, and I would say that Beyerdynamic's first foray into the noise-cancelling realm has been a very successful one.

The included app can also help you tweak the sound signature to match your hearing profile. Alas, for all that it offers, there are some downsides, like the easy-to-misfire control panel, but primarily the high price.

Imperfection at its finest

from Sound Guys

The Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC is yet another premium noise cancelling headset to hit the market. Microphone and sound quality are leagues above much of the competition. However, that isn't to say the Lagoon is without its faults. Fortunately, much of the issues we ran into during our review period may be remedied with firmware updates.

The Lagoon is, by far, the most skilled wireless headphone I’ve heard under $400. So, yes, it certainly beats its competition in terms of sound quality. Beautifully balanced, highly versatile and impressively detailed, these cans work just as well for pop as they do classical music. It would be great if there wasn’t such a huge difference in bass response with the ANC turned on. But this is an issue shared by all ANC headphones. And life is a series of compromises, so I’ll just have to get over it.

Like any good headphone, listening the Lagoon ANC feels like you’re hearing your music all over again, for the very first time.  The rich, rewarding sound doesn’t miss a beat, pairs great with any genre, and takes full advantage of the best ANC on the market to ensure you hear your music – and nothing else.  Our take?  For $399, wireless headphones never sounded so good.
