The Beats Powerbeats2 is a gym-focused Bluetooth earphone pair with a frequency response that will only appeal to extreme bass fans.

Love it or hate it, Beats is one of the most popular brands for headphones and speakers on the market today. For the fitness crowd, Beats released the PowerBeats 2 wireless earphones. The biggest draw, besides the brand recognition, is IPX4 rating for sweat- and water-resistance. While not fully waterproof, experts did not damage the drivers even during a light shower or when working up a sweat at the gym. For a snug fit, it comes with four pairs of ear tips of different sizes and also has an over-the-ear loop for increased stability. While it might seem like the ear hooks would increase the weight, most reviewers actually found it very light and comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Some reviewers found the fit to be a bit too open and relaxed though it never actually fell out of their ear. For the most part the open fit didn't affect the audio except when in very loud situations or when it was very windy.

Like other Beats products, experts immediately noticed the heavy skew towards the bass. When listening to tracks with a heavy bassline, experts were pleasantly surprised with the overall sound quality. Even at higher volumes, they didn't experience any distortion though moderate volumes did make the lack of high-mid and high frequency definition that much more obvious. They noticed this even more on tracks that lacked a deep bass with many tracks sounding muddled due to lack of treble. Still, Sound Review adds, "…the vocals remain crystal clear."

As a Bluetooth device, the PowerBeats 2 does come with its own battery and charging cable. In most tests, critics were able to get around seven to eight hours of life with a single charge. Instead of audible notifications for battery life, PowerBeats 2 uses an indicator light. A steady red light means there is less than an hour left and blinking red means less than 15. Many reviewers preferred this method as it didn't interrupt their listening experience and it was very easy to understand. Once docked, it took them a little under two hours to full charge the earphones.

In general, reviewers only recommend the PowerBeats 2 to people who want a heavily boosted bass in their songs. Otherwise, they do not consider it a good bargain for the money. Toms Guide states, "While they have a strong bass and an over-ear design comfortable for exercise, their sound isn't up to snuff with other buds in their price range." PC Mag adds, "The Beats PowerBeats 2 Wireless is for people who want extreme bass, and not really anyone else…"
