What's bad

  • Bad value compared to Gear Fit 2

Not all of us need fancy smartwatches. Fitness trackers remain popular as a simplified -- and more affordable -- alternative. Samsung hopes to ride this trend and capitalize on the success of the Gear Fit 2 with the Gear Fit 2 Pro.

If you liked the Gear Fit 2’s design, then you’ll feel right at home with the Gear Fit 2 Pro. It’s practically identical, apart from the new band design with two color options.

That isn’t a bad thing. The curved design makes it comfortable to wear for a long time and while not exactly stylish, it is attractive. However, some reviewers point out that its large size might be awkward if you have smaller wrists.

It comes with the same 5 ATM water-resistance as the Apple Watch 3 -- meaning it can survive down to 164 feet underwater. So you don’t have to worry about taking it off when swimming or showering.

A Super AMOLED display curves around the front of the watch. Samsung took comfort into account by orienting the interface vertically. This means you won't need to tilt your head to the side to read the screen.

Many reviewers also find the display one of the brightest and sharpest screens on the market, making it super simple and easy to navigate the menus in any lighting situation.

So what about the hardware? The biggest update from the previous model is the addition of onboard memory. While it's not a ton of space, it allows you to cache songs from an app such as Spotify. This means you don’t need to bring your phone with you if you want to listen to music while exercising. Although the specs list storage at 4GB, only 2GB or so is available after accounting for the space taken up by software.

Aside from that, it comes with an accelerometer, barometer, gyro sensor, heart rate sensor, GPS, and 512MB of RAM. It performs admirably and offers some “smart” features too -- such as sending and receiving texts, accepting or denying calls, and controlling your music.

Its fitness tracking is also accurate. It provides a wide variety of exercises and everyday activities. At a glance, you can see daily steps, calories burned, flights of stairs climbed, and heart rate. You can swipe further for a deeper dive into your daily activities.

Regarding battery life, experts got three full days of life on a single charge.

Unfortunately, while the Gear Fit 2 Pro offers an excellent experience, critics have a hard time recommending it over the much cheaper Gear Fit 2 as it has most of the same features.

Tech Radar states, “... you can get 90% of what Samsung’s new smart wearable offers in last year’s much cheaper Gear Fit 2.” Trusted Reviews adds, “... the original Gear Fit 2 is a more cost-effective option. Plus, there are cheaper dedicated trackers for people unconcerned about smartwatch functionality.”
