Today I discovered a free service from Connectotel that allows you to send a text message (SMS) from your GSM mobile phone to Skype. For those of you who don't know what Skype is, it's an application with which you can talk over the internet for free. Download it and use it NOW if you're not already - it's an amazing tool!

Anyway, this is a cell phone site, so lets talk about how you can use your mobile phone to send messages to Skype users.

  1. 1

Select the menu option on your cell phone to add a new entry to the phone book.

  2. 2

Enter a name for the new entry (eg. SMS To Skype).

  3. 3

Enter the number 011447747782320 (if you are in Europe, remove the 011).

  4. 4

Save the entry to the phone book.

  5. 5

Add the Skypename smsgateway to your Skype contacts. Anyone who wants to receive SMS to Skype messages must have this Skypename in their contacts list.

  6. 6

Select the option on your phone to send an SMS text message.

  7. 7

Type the word skype followed by a space.

  8. 8

Type the text of your message.

  9. 9

When asked to type the number, select the SMS to Skype phone number from your phone book. (If you missed step one, you can enter the number here - 011447747782320).

  10. 10

Select the option to send the message.

There you have it. If you're a Skype user or know a Skype user, you can be sending text messages in no time. There are no charges for the service except the cost of the text message through your carrier (cellular service provider). You should also note, that since the above service is based in Europe, North American users will likely have to shell out a bit more for the SMS because because it's being sent internationally. It's usually not much (in my case an extra 5 cents Canadian), but be sure to talk with your carrier to find out how much extra it will cost you.

Give it a try and get ready, because Skype to SMS is coming real soon!
